Just got an iPhone 3GS and am on a very basic plan where it's $20 for 200 minutes and early evenings at 6. No caller ID, texts, voicemail, etc. After SAF and tax it comes out to about $30/mo.

Any idea on what I can do to squeeze more out of the Rogers reps? I'm also trying to get out of the $35 activation fee they are going to charge me  I'm guessing I can't threaten to cancel as I've only had the phone for a day.

I see people here getting amaazing deals for extremely cheap. How do you guys do it?

How they did it?

They negotiated before doing an upgrade when they actually had some power. Now, who is going to believe them when they play the "I want to go to Telus" card? Agents will just laugh.

It was very silly move on your part. You didn't think of long-term consequences as you poured down your hard earned cash (well, you will once you get the bill) for a phone that you will get bored of in couple of months.

You can return the phone of course if you are not satisfied. Nobody signs 3 year contract and complains about it the next day. Never saw on RFD.

Does $20 include data? And you have the money to buy an iPhone but can't pay for a better plan?

No it doesn't.
It's the EPP plan (which used to be $17.50)
Only 200 minutes and 6PM Evenings/Weekends

Usually, they are existing customers and negotiate the deal BEFORE they say yes to a plan.

Well from what I understood, they don't negotiate at all before you get a plan. My brother tried constantly and they wouldn't give him a better deal at all. Once however, he called in complaining that Bell was giving him unlimited data for $15/mo and so now he pays $15/mo for 6GB at Rogers.

Does anyone have the number for retention?

See the Rogers retentions thread in Hot Deals for this + info on getting a better deal. However, as others have said you don't really have any footing to negotiate with them. You just renewed your contract when you got the iPhone, so they have absolutely zero incentive to give you a better deal, and you can't threaten to leave for Fido since they're the same company and won't care since they get your money either way.

Just curious, how much did you get the iphone 3gs for? I thought they require a mandatory data plan.

Instead of starting a new thread, we study (diligently mind you :D) the retention thread.

I'm pullin' for ya! I know you can do it! Kill this thread, and redirect efforts to that one.

Well, I actually called in complaining a bit about caller ID not being included and here's my new plan:

$25 + SAF + tax

- 200 weekday minutes
- Unlimited weekends and early evening starting at 6
- Unlimited incoming calls!
- 2500 text messages
- Caller ID, call waiting, voicemail, etc.

Not bad :D. Activation fee waived.

Also, to yaguang: I bought it from Best Buy mobile and they allowed me to pay an extra $50 to avoid the data plan. Paid about $395 for the 32GB, after tax.

It's only for people without texting plans who have to pay 15 cents per text received.

New customer, Rogers. Done from Best Buy Heartland.

I did it because I live on a campus with Wifi everywhere for most of the year, even at home I'm only using a few MB of data per week on a data plan.

Thats actually a pretty good plan giving you're a new customer, I have a similar plan minus the voicemail but I was an existing customer so they just gave it to me. Just out of curiosity, what you say to them?
