my contract 'ends' june 24th (next week) and i thought i could just call bell and tell them i want to cancel on that day. i called them yesterday and they said they needed one month notice for me to cancel. so, my last day with my cell will actually be july 18th. what do they even need notice for?
is there any way to actually cancel my contract on june 24th or is their policy in stone?

All carriers do this, as soon as you port who the # (assuming u will), that day will be ur cancellation day. On this day, Bell will charge you 30days of service charge.
Don't u ever ever think about porting out one day early (or the day of contract ends), Bell is a fxxking d!ck sob. Posters from HoFo has reported Bell has dinged them $100 for early contract termination.
Here is the dilemma, cancellation day almost always falls on billing day, if you call to cancel ur line one month ahead, May 18th (for Jun 18th), you will not be able to port out ur number, because after this day your a/c is inactive, you dodge the ETF but loss ability to port.
Just suck it up, payup this dumping fee.

Don't inform Bell 30 days before your contract expires if you are changing to another carrier and if you want to keep your old number.
I have heard that Bell can lockout the number from being ported over to any carrier and then you will have to all sorts of paperwork to get your number back & then you will be without the old cell number for a few days. Bell will prorate your bill for the 1 or 2 days at a higher non-contract rate. (Mined went from $35/month to $55 for 2 days)
The salesman at the Phone Booth told me that Bell will make difficult for you to switch if they are given notice.
The best is to wait until your contract expires and then signup with another carrier and they can switch you over immediately.
BTW :The stupid Bell are still sending me statements for $0 owing for the last 6 months.
