View Full Version : Job Interviews?

Assuming I don't screw up any questions and have satisfactory answers, how likely am I to get hired? I recently got a callback from one of the places I've applied to. How should one dress for a retail job interview? How should I behave?
Thanks.

You again. I think I got banned for "personally attacking" you in your last thread. I don't recall anything of the sort but oh well.
I want to give you some advice though. Brutally honest advice. There is no guarantee in these little joe jobs or in professional jobs in securing the position just because you do well in the interview. There are many factors. Also I would just dress in something like a golf shirt and khaki pants. Also you sound very insecure, coming to a message board like RFD to get people to micromanage your every move. I would suggest getting confidence in yourself as employers will pick up on your lack of it. Hopefully you don't take these comments the wrong way.

Unfortunately interviews are a 100% comparative test. You can do everything right and still lose because someone else was simply better. So relax now a bit and realize that there's only so much you can control :)
You never go wrong in a suit. Some say it's overkill but you know what, there's almost zero downside (minus someone posting about how they showed up in jeans and got a job therefore that proves suits don't work blah blah).
How should you behave? Uh, like yourself, which hopefully is normal. Seriously, the best thing is to simply be calm. People get very nervous about interviews but really, you truly know the subject matter (YOU) better than anyone so all you have to do is talk about yourself. When else in life can you sit and talk about yourself for a hr or so and not have people think you an arrogant bore :)
Lastly, research the company and figure out what they do. Don't go in there looking for a job because you simply want a paycheque. At the very least, hopefully, you are looking for experience.

Be a happy man and be calm during the interview.
There are so many sample questions for retail jobs online. Most likely they will give scenario/situational questions about customers and how you would react.
Wear a professional suit.
Act normal and sit straight like a soldier and not like a turtle.

Thanks all, it's just that I've never been to an interview before and as such have no idea of what to expect. I've been researching sample questions and have practiced a few times.
I'm fairly confident I'll do well in my interview, but getting the job is another matter entirely.
@Churo1; I do not believe it was in my thread, but rather a similar thread in which another student was also seeking job advice. The advice you've given is valid, but on the other hand, is on the fine line between trying to belittle, and genuinely trying to help, and some of your words come very close to personal attacks, in both Mugen123's and my threads.
That said, please try to tone down the negativity. Your time is well appreciated.

I don't know where/when this Churo guy came about but you, OP, need to tone down your emotional sensitivity, unless you are female, in that case..... carry on.

It sounds like someone is a bit butthurt over something?

For a retail interview, I think a suit is a bit overkill. I remember reading you should always dress 1 step up from what you expect to be wearing to the job. So, if you are applying to work at wal-mart, really, khaki's & a nice shirt would likely be good enough, considering you'll probably be wearing jeans & a t-shirt everyday. On the other hand, if it is a retail job at say, Moore's or an upscale clothing store, then you'd want to dress professionally, and a suit may not quite be overkill. Same with if it is a retail management job.
Depends on what the job is for, specifically.
