The only one I can think of right now is the asset management industry where 60% of your total income is based on bonuses correlating to your performance.
I really hate jobs where the pay is based on seniority. It gives me no incentive to work hard. I'm in university right now studying business... but I'm trying to decide which industry to go to.

Greetings.
Some advice: quit being so picky, especially right now with the economy being not so great. Take what you get. If you get in with a company that is employee owned and has profit sharing, that will probably be as close as you get in the professional field. But like I said, most likely you will just have to take what you can get, you can't pick and choose these days. If you are talking about joe jobs, sales with commission pays for performance.

If he can afford to be picky (I don't know if he can or not), why shouldn't he be? It's much worse if you can be picky but aren't and just take the first thing that comes along.

Greetings. I'm not saying take the first thing that comes along. I'm saying in these economic times it is hard to pick and choose your employer. Sorry if you can't handle the truth.

Save certain positions, pay will not be based on performance (though a bonus might be to some extent) as this will often lead away from collaborative approaches which is what exists in the truly great companies. For some of us, we get bonused both on personal goals and corporate goals...and the group goals payout is usually higher.
That being said, Sales typically has a very high performance based pay in the form of comissions. There is also far more stress in these environments (though can still be very enjoyable).
Few jobs in the corporate world (white collar) have pay simply based on seniority. They are based on position and performance.
