I'm looking at getting the iPhone 3GS, but the monthly plans are definitely causing me to hesitate, and I have a few questions about useage and stuff.

I know that I use ~50 minutes of voice per month, so I can get the $25 voice plan with 100 minutes, unlimited e/w after 7 pm, and unlimited SMS.

There is also the iPhone value pack with call display, VVM, and Who Called for $10 a month.

That is $35 w/o data.

I'm not sure how much data I would use, but it looks like the $30 for 6 GB is the best plan. The only cheaper option that I see is $25 for 500 MB, but I don't know how easy/hard it is to rack up that much data useage in a month.

That total $65 a month, which is pricey. I could go with the $60 iPhone plan, where I get 250 minutes, but only 500 MB of data, no call display or Who Called, no tethering. Not sure how MMS works, but I think it would be extra, but I don't see myself using it.

Anyone have any suggestions for cheaper plans? Would the phone display who is calling if they are in my address book, or would I need call display to get that?

Any opinions on this would be helpful from current iPhone users.

I'm on the same boat. I'm going to get an iphone for the first time tomorrow and have been searching for the magical best deal I can get. From what I can tell the plan you've outlined is the cheapest its going to get with those features. The 6gb of data is going to be unusable, so no worries about going over and paying through the nose for extra data...voice might be trickier with so few minutes, at least on my side, but the unlimited texts are great! I'm trying to figure out if whether FIDO comes out with a student plan in the fall like they did last year with their lovely 17.50 plan, will I be able to switch to it without extending the contract...They also offer cheap promotional EPP plans now and again which could bring your bill down.

I've never exceeded 300MB a month & that's a lot of surfing, some Youtube etc. Although I will be tethering on an upcoming one week vacation so we'll see.

Yea, I doubt that will happen. Fido will charge you if you unlock one of their phones (if they found out from lets say sending in your phone for repair). At least this is what i heard from a rep. However; most of the time they don't know anything.

The best deal is the $25+6GB+$10 pack that you mentioned. It will get you the full functionality of the iPhone with the best value (assuming you dont need more minutes than what the $25 plan gets you).

Owning an iPhone is expensive..

I have not been told or seen the $10 value pack. Have a link to it somewhere?

It's on the bottom. The value pack comes with VVM, call id and whocall.

Why would anyone want Who Called?

I would pay just to get rid of it.

I find services like Who Called useful. Nice to know that I missed a call from someone even if they didn't leave a message.

if you have call display though, you just look in missed callls....
it is very annoying to be texted something you already know

I also got on the iphone boat. I just ordered iphone 3GS right now, total came to $180 Taxes in.
The plan I got was $55 + taxes. it has the 6GB Data plan, but I want to know if the data plan is really worth it.

Are there people here who use 6GB data plan solely for entertainment? IE no IM or email or other business related use, just videos, general browsing etc...

The CSR told me that I could get the data plan and then cancel it later on for a charge of $100. Because if I don't get the data plan then the cost of iphone would be $400. So if I get the data plan and cancel it later on, technically I save $100

I might as well post this in Fido deals thread.
