So it sounds like tethering is part of any data plans > 1 Gig until Dec 31, 2009. Then Fido and Rogers are coming out with tethering plans? Then what is the incentive to upgrade to the 6 Gig plan if tethering is not allowed stating in 2010?

they probably want to charge a $5-10 tethering fee after that. first give everybody a taste, then take it away

I am sure that is that the case. Then there is no incentive to upgrade to a higher data plan now right? What are others doing?

So if we get it now, do we lose it in the future?

Robbers once said incoming text is free for the first 2500 msgs, what about now?
I won't be surprise if Robbers is tacking on the tethering fee.

So is it really impossible for carriers to find out that you are tethering. ie...
Here is Fido / Rogers official policy:
"Tethering cannot be used with data add-on of less than 1GB."
What if someone hacked the phone to tether from a <1BG data plan. Will carriers be able to tell and charge extra for this?

so can they enable or disable teathering at their end? or can you override this at the handset level? the reason i asked is my iphone 3.0 cant teather/feather but i put the same sim in my rocket stick and it tethers just fine,.

I'm not too worried about it. As a business user, I'll pay the extra $5/mth and write it off on my taxes. The upside is huge that I can tether a laptop in a display booth at a trade show rather than pay the $400/day that trade show organizers want for a network connection.
I may be mistaken on this next point...
Why would you tether via 3G when for most non-business users you can walk into a coffee shop and get connected so much faster via the WiFi built-in to your laptop?
I've been testing the speed of tethered 3G versus tethered WiFi and WiFi is very obviously much faster. The only point I'm unsure on is my 3G speed I'm getting here at my office. I've run an app that indicates I'm getting about 1700-1900kps but claims it is an EDGE network.
Btw... I installed a nice Android app for measuring 3G consumption - "3G Watchdog".

One big benefit of tethering would be security. I would think the cellular network is more secure than an outside WiFi connection?

I was able to override it with a custom IPCC file when they didn't want to enable it for me last week (with the 3.0GM), so in 2010, I'm not going to update my carrier settings. :)

Depends. Assuming you don't use anything to encrypt your traffic then tethering would be more secure. If you do encrypt your traffic, such as through a corporate VPN, then there is no difference between them and then you can argue about local network security issues (wifi spot will be less secure, but again, it deepends).
They're fighting a losing battle. Just sell the data and don't worry about how people use it. People can and will use tethering without paying the new fee or whatever they come out with.

Yes, there will always be a work around via softwares.
What they want to do is go after those users who are not so tech savvy enough and/or does not know about it. There will always be users who find the feature useful and will simply pay to have that feature enabled.
It's like my uncle who almost bought himself a Microsoft Office suite for his new computer so he can do word and such...
But I told him about OpenOffice, a free solution which he had no idea of.

I would think pretty much any jailbroken iPhone, or rooted Android device(assuming they can be rooted) can tehter all they want without Rogers knowing.
I'm not sure how it works for the BB's though. Does PdaNet not dial anything out?

For now. Tethering is included in plasn >= 1 Gig until Dec 31, 2009. At the moment, they are vague. They may include a tethering fee after that if they say it's only free until that date.

Meh, I'll just have to add it to the list of things for retentions to credit on my next renewal, since I'm doubt I'm going to be renewing my contract for a phone anytime soon.

i dont have the SOC code on my account but i can tether with my samsung i616 and usb stick, but can't with my iphone 3G and 3G S, why is that? can soembody explain why the other devices work but my iphone doesnt? so if its just a matter of the teathering SOC only applies to the iPhone, what is the soc for the other devices and why is it on my account?

A specific SOC is required for the iPhone only.
From what I've seen, they ran some kind of patch to add it to all the account with data option of 1GB or more.
But that's in theory since there a few account where the patch didn't work. The way the iPhone is made is that if you don't have the tethering soc on the account it will say "Call fido".
If you Tethering is enable and your iPhone says it's being tethering but it's not working then that's a different story because right now there an issue that the tethering is not working properly.
You get the normal IP and DNS but no adress can be pingable and all page will timeout and won't load. For some reason it also seems to be random so some day it's working and day it's down.
