So here are our vitals:

I use less than 20 minutes on the phone a month
I want an iPhone 3GS
I will use some, but less than 500Mb/month of data
My girlfriend uses less than 60 minutes on the phone / month
We almost exclusively call each other / close family on Rogers
She doesn't care what handset she gets
We don't mind buying out the handsets if it saves us money in the end
We prefer not to do a contract unless it's fairly beneficial.
We're new customers (I'm switching from 7-eleven PAYG)

What's our best approach? Are there any plans that would be ideal for us?

I looked at Rogers site, and the family deal with a single data plan should be $35+25+saf+tax, but is that the best? Is that even available with the iPhone? Is it possible to get that without contract?

Is there some way to get PAYG with data and an iPhone? (It would probably be cheaper for us to both go PAYG, and have me pay for the data plan.)

Any and all comments are appreciated. :)

I doubt you can get data on Pay As You Go. Even if you can, it will be pay per use and it will be really expensive.

Family plans are a total rip off. They charge $15 for the second user and you still have to pay the system access fee. You might as well get a second plan for a few dollars more.

2 FIDO $15 plans plus a $25 data plan is more than the family plan I outlined above, and doesn't come with free minutes between the two phones. That seems like a worse idea to me...?

contract will save you big bucks on the iphone...
then the buddy package is unlimited between the 2 phones, I believe... then get the minimal voice and data package money allows, rogers to rogers unlimited?

You can get plans with free Fido to Fido calling.

Fido offers $15 plans with no system access fees.

Family plans requires you to share minutes. Seperate plans do not.

Considering our combined usage is unlikely to exceed 80 minutes / month, I don't mind "sharing" 100 / 200 minutes.

Sorry, not sure where my math went wrong $15+$15+$25 = $55/m, which is less than family plan. But how much would adding free Fido to Fido cost? I don't see it on the website.

Also, is visual voice mail an option for any of these?

LOL, so I just dealt with a pretty slick sales lady, and this is what we've ended up with for now, though changing plans is still possible if there's something better out there:

iPhone 3GS for $199 and LG TE365 for free
~$90/m total
500Mb data plan
100 shared minutes
500 shared SMS /text messages
free evenings after 9pm and weekends

Basically everything unlimited first month, so we can use it as much as we would like to, then see how to adjust the plan after. (We may save $5 or spend $15 more, depending on what we want.)

Any other suggestions are still welcome, we have 30 days to return this if needed. :)
