If you are asking if it has an FM Tuner, the answer is no

You can stream FM Radio over the data connection. There are several apps for you to do this.

FlyCast is a good one, but it streams internet radio vs local FM Radio

No it does not. Neither does the new iPhone3GS.

It probably takes too much room (comparebly) inside iPhone for it to be worrh it. Everything is crammed inside iPhone. There's literally no room for any additions.

I can highly recommend WunderRadio. It's not free ($9.99); but it's the only app I felt was worth paying on iTunes. If you can listen to your favorite FM channel on your PC; chances are pretty good it can be tuned in WunderRadio.

I cannot believe people listen to radio anymore......

Are you going to get your news / weather / traffic from your personal playlist on your library? ;)

Local radio is still pretty strong, for pretty much those reasons.

I listen to the radio when I drive. In fact, I would suggest that radio will out last newspapers and TV in terms of the amount of people that use this medium.

I have a headset for my ipod that puts an FM tuner on the iPod. It has a tiny amount of hardware on the headset (the size of a clip) and uses software on the phone that just showed up, nothing to install.

I never looked if it would work on the iPhone.

I thought it was pretty cool, so I bought it, but it has been sitting in a drawer for the past 2 years or so now. ;)

Nokia phones use the headset as an antenna for the built in tuner. I think what you have is a FM tuner on the headset. It is not really part of the iPod.

If that is the case, it should work on the iPhone too.

My $40 Chinese MP4 player and my 3 year old Nokia phone have FM support.

I don't think Apple didn't include it out of space concern. They have two seperate chips for WiFi and BlueTooth connectivity even though there are tons of chips that integrate the two into a single package. Hell, you can easily find an all-in-one chip that does FM, BlueTooth and WiFi and takes the same space as either chip Apple is already using for WiFi and BlueTooth.

I say either it's a cost saving measure. Apple think most people don't use FM on their cell phone and thus no need to waste money on it. - or - It's just one less thing for Apple to worry about in terms of debugging/troubleshooting/technical support.

for a data centric phone, such as the iphone it makes more sense to push streaming radio, than FM radio. since apple is pushing the proivders to encourage data, instead of not using data.

one might also assume that since the iphone is a combination phone and mp3 player their emphasis is not going to be on providing an FM tuner.

I love WunderRadio. Fortunately, got it on sale for $5.99. It finds lots of interesting local internet-only radio stations as well--as well as local stations for any location I ask.

There are free radio apps too.

As for why Apple didn't include an FM tuner, you're all off base. Think about it: Apple prefers that you play iPod music, the kind you have to buy from iTunes.

That said, the iPod in the iPhone is ad-free, unlike most of the radio stations I listen to.

That's exactly the reason why the iPhone doesn't have an FM radio tuner. Every other manufacturer is able to pack FM tuners into their smartphones because they don't have a vested interest in the online music business.
