We reached our goal, should be sending the dream to the U.S. in the next couple of days
If you've purchased a HTC Dream please donate here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=3953515&postcount=38) to help root the phone.
Why should you root your Dream/Magic
See paid apps in the market place
Create full backups of the state of your phone
Get rid of all Rogers Branding/Links
Turn your phone into a wireless router that provides interent access
Use your phone as a tehter to connect your computer/laptop to the internet
Install Applications to your SD Card to save space
You can run applications that require root, like screenshot and Auto Rotate your Browser and other applications
customize your boot image
You can install a full Linux distribution, like Debian
You can install the latest Android build directly from the Android source tree
Create custom ROMs
For more information you can visit here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=442480)
Current total of donations is: $620.79 USD of ~$620 USD needed.
So the roms/radio of the Rogers Dream/Magic are similar enough that hacking the Dream will also enable root on the magic.

You jailbreak an iPhone
Now you have to hack your HTC to get root access.
What's next?

Next, people will have to USE their windows mobile phone to get a blue screen of death ;)
*ducks from thrown objects*
I Joke I joke.. I have a windows mobile HTC phone and I'm quite satisfied with it... And I don't get any blue screens :D
Friend just got an HTC Dream and I'm quite impressed by it actually. Seems like a nice phone. I was especially impressed by the smooth scrolling in the browser.

I've never used WM but just browsing around all the smartphone forums I can't believe the number of apps WM actually has. I have a sneaking suspecion it actually drafs the iPhone, of couse they're not all neatly placed in 1 spot.

Somebody with deep pockets put us over the top. Hopefully I will have the phone out in the next day or two, and with any luck it'll be hacked shortly after.

just curious as to what happens if Haykuro isn't able to find a way to root the HTC Dream/Magic?

Well then we all donated money for nothing :). I wont feel so bad considering it was just $20 from me. The nice man who donated $275 might feel cheated though...

If history has taught me anything about technology its that a hack will always be found. It's a matter of "when" not "if". (you probably already knew that)
So I'm hoping that if Haykuro can't do it, he'll be honest enough to pass the phone to someone else that may be able to hack it.

Not sure yet, still looking into them all. I'll wait to see the phone rooted then make my decision based on what they look like at that point in time.
