Any recommendations on rust proofing or if it is really worth doing. I bought a 2006 escape and am considering it. If so would the oil spray be adequate.

Yes, it's extremely important to Rust Proof. Most places will rust proof your car with some spray for $150 (which you'll have to pay each year before the winter).
I went to this place that uses the rust proofing Syntec, the one the big car companies use (the car dealerships charge $1000 + for this).
These guys are the guys the dealerships use, and they only charge half of that price. Then you just need to go back every other year and pay $20 for them to recheck & they'll redo the parts that the rust proofing came off of...
The place is located in Etobicoke

I dealt with Richard and I believe I paid $500 no tax but you have to pay cash.
Tell them Angelo with the Rav4 sent you if they give you grief... I told them I would send them some business.

Depends on how long you intend to keep your car. A modern car is very unlikely to develop rust until it's at least 7-8 years old even if driven in the salt every day all winter.
