Simple question: :)

Besides Outlook and Thunderbird (and webmail), what email client do you use?

Since I've been using Office Home and Student (no Outlook), I tried Windows Live Mail (not the Window Mail that comes with Vista).

Personally, I've had a good experience. It serves my needs. Let's me manage all my inboxes from a single Quick Folder.
I know that Thuderbird seems to be king of the freeware email apps, but I think WLM is not a bad piece of software.

At work, I use Outlook, though.
I do miss Search folders and Favorite folder shortcuts, when I'm using WLM.

I do 99% of my email reading and 90% of my email writing via gmail, with Thunderbird at home downloading local copies of everything.

For work, I use.....Lotus Notes. Worst. Program. Ever.

Tbird is simply the best, why bother asking about any other?

Ha, which version? I found it slow to start but once it was running it was fine. I've also heard that it has some powerful scripting options, but to be honest I don't care enough about email too look into them.

I actually want to know this too. I was on windows mail and now Tbird. The problem I'm having is with these mail clients not being able to handle Gmail's IMAP service properly. I'm saving my draft copies and for some odd reason those drafts ended up in the "sent Items" folder a minute after. I've had problems with windows mail where every time I go file -> save a copy of my draft gets sent to the recipient which kills the entire idea of "draft". I'm very fustrated right now. I've also had similar problems with Tbird as well and now I can't trust any mail clients.

Some of your questions that I have answers to:
1) What file format did you save it as?
eml

2) How do you know for sure that it's been sent to the recipient?
Checking "sent items" tab in Gmail via browser

Any suggestions or things that I might be doing wrong that I don't know of?

Well I do use thunderbird now, but for ages I used the venerable Pegasus Mail (http://www.pmail.com/). The only reason I switched was because PMAIL's HTML renderer was not as good as Thunderbird's.

I pretty much stopped using any browser base email since I got my Blackberry, but for those really long emails or sending files/etc., usually use GMail or my University's default email system.

Most people don't know this, but Gmail is a mail service and a client.

You can set up other POP3 accounts within Gmail, and it will download the messages from your other accounts (Hotmail, Yahoo, Webmail, etc)

All you need to do after is set some filters and labels, and all of your email will be in a neat sorted inbox.

I think they all offer that. Yahoo has a similar feature. Not sure about Hotmail, but I am sure they will do it too.

I still like PINE (FreeBSD). on my desktop I use Outlook 2007 and at work I use Outlook 2003

I used a lot of others in the past. Eudora, Mutt, mail (FreeBSD)

I use SquirelMail to access my mail thru the web.

I used Eudora for about a decade, and finally switched to web-based mail just to be able to access my mail on the road.

Best thing about Tbird is that it is so easy to backup or move my profile and email from one pc to a new one or new windows install, just a copy past. It is also easy to share the same email directory or profile between Tbird in say windows 7 and vista, or windows and linux or bsd, in dual or multi boot situations.

Are you able to forward your emails from your hotmail account to gamil, or is MS still not allowing that?

Agreed. Even did that from my PC to my MacBook. Saved me time from getting gmail IMAP set up again and tweaked to work properly.

Tbird for both home and work.
