View Full Version : Should I buy a netbook or laptop?

I need a computer for traveling. I need it for surfing the internet watching youtube videos/checking email/posting photos. I especially need it to edit and upload basic youtube videos. I will be installing dreamweaver onto it and using it as an ftp client (to upload and update webpage, light work).
I went to staples and checked out both laptops and netbooks. What I found is that the netbooks are very light and easy for travel. Definitely something I like. I have skinny fingers so the keyboard size didn't bother me.
However I know that there are different netbooks priced at different ranges. Some netbooks were built for gaming. I need to find one that is suitable to run dreamweaver and edit basic videos. (netbooks don't have firewire ports do they?)
For laptop, I like the Dell mini 12". It's the thinnest I've seen (that is not apple branded). It's about 699 and that's above my budget.
I'm aiming for something around 500-600.
So my question is are there any netbooks that are strong enough to handle light video editing and run dreamweaver? (dreamweaver is not a big program..about 52 mb.)
Thanks for reading and hope someone knows..or are into netbooks..If it wasn't for the size of netbooks, I'd definitely go with a laptop..but I need to probably be on the road every other day..
Thanks.

Sounds like you'd need something that would be even like 1.6 ghz but at least a dual core cpu in it.
Maybe a 12-14" laptop would be best then especialy if you want to edit video's.

I guess I'm forced into the laptop since I can't really imagine editing videos on such a small screen...but really, it didn't seem that small at the store..Hm..I guess the question now is where can I get a small laptop? (12")? Or which brand do you recommend? I know NOTHING about non-apple laptops. Is Compaq a HP brand? I alway felt that HP was crappy...but that was a long time ago. Dell, Compaq, looks appealing so far..but I'm feeling that ACER is the lower end priced laptops? Which brands are not too expensive but is built good? for ex: canon is the best brand for photography these days but they have a wide range of prices..what is the "canon" of laptops?
Sorry, if my question is silly. I've given it some thought. I'm hoping someone has an opinion...thanks.

The Dell Mini 12 base models (http://www1.ca.dell.com/content/products/category.aspx/notebooks?c=ca&cs=cadhs1&l=en&s=dhs&~ck=mn#subcats=&navla=6667~0~50056&navidc=Inspiron%20Laptops&navValc=Inspiron%20Mini%2012&a=6667~0~50056) are all under $600.
Acer has a 11.6" netbook (http://gizmodo.com/5258785/acers-aspire-one-ao751h-116+inch-barely+a+netbook-officially-380) with a 1366x768 screen coming out soon for about $500. That's the one I'm waiting for.
You're not going to find a 13" or smaller laptop for $600. Only chunky, heavy 14"+ models for that price.

Acer's Aspire is there low end latops, you'd want a exstensa model but there all starting around $800.
HP & Compac are one company now.
The Dell 12 might be the closest you find to do what you want to do with enought power to do it.

Editing video on a netbook is going to be a slow process. Netbook processors are very slow in comparison to a traditional notebook. Dreamweaver will be a hog as well.
If you're doing anything besides light surfing, get a notebook. Only benefit to a netbook is the size & batt life.

Netbooks is what I've been waiting for. OP since this is for traveling do you really need to edit/work using it. They are perfect for Internet, I will be running iTunes for my TV Shows, Movies and MP3. I also get to play one of my favorite Windows games, Space Cadet 3D Pinball. LOL
I'm still undecided but I like the new 10.1" Toshiba NB200-006, Best Buy is selling it for $450, I wished it was $50 cheaper. I'm not a fan of Acer, HP and Dell is too expensive.

I am waiting for the Lenovo S12 with ION to come out... if that think fully supports Hackintosh, it was made with me in mind.

I like it. The design is nice also. But do you think the dv4 is better?

Stay as far away as possible from those plastic garbage HP laptops sold in FS / BB. That stuff is the LOWEST quality machine you can buy. The plastics creak from day 1, and the laptop also has chassis flex from day 1. Everything is made to be shiny and ugly (the screen surface, too).
Pick up a Lenovo or a Dell Vostro instead.

How about LG X120 Whatchamacallit? I bought one for my wife from Futurehop. It is very nice and light. It is more for woman (main colour is white with lime green and pink trim) unless you can get black one.

On principle, I really like the X120. But it's too small for my purposes. Maybe if I was travelling a lot I would get one.

Anyone hackintosh a mini 10v?
Reportedly only the Mini 9 (http://gadgets.boingboing.net/2008/12/17/osx-netbook-compatib.html) has full compatibility.
