Currently I own Palm Tungsten E which I had for more than 5 years. Before it dies on me, I would like to do a research on replacement.
Basically, I use Palm for appointments and contacts. I know cell phones also contain calendar features but I find that compare to Tunsgsten it's really too basic for me.
Any recommendations?

Any of the new smartphones will do leaps and bounds over the tungsten.
Examples: Palm Pre, iPhone, Blackberry, Android Phones (HTC Magic/G1), Nokia N Series (N95/96). There is also Windows Mobile, but I'd stay away from any WinMo phone ATM, all the other smart phones are just so much better.

this might be a silly question to some of you but if I get a smartphone, I'm not obligated to get a data plan from the cell phone complany, right?
I was talking to Telus the other day about this and they told me that I need to get the data plan which I have no interest of. My understanding was that data plan is useful if you want to be connected internet and be able to send data (like e-mail).
But couldn't you stay connected to internet as long as the device as wi-fi capability and there was able to pick up the free connection?

No. But you won't get the heavily discounted prices without a data plan.
If you juts want PDA without a phone, just get Palm TX. It's the improved version of the Tungsten.

I have both the palm tx and the iphone. I still have my T3.
The tungsten and TX are faster for data entry and search (contacts...)
For everything else the iphone is great.
You can get the iphone with a cell plan, no data if you wish. I pay about 30$ for the voice portion. You might also consider the palm pre coming out this week I think.

If you pick up a PalmOS based Treo, it'll be exactly the same OS and interface as your tungsten.
Not many available these days, though depending on your provider, you could buy an unlocked one from Tigerdirect or others to hook up.
