so I mapped a network drive to my XP computer, and it sees the files that the XP computer is sharing. I would like to double click on the media file, and have it play on my Windows 7 computer. When I do so, it doesn't work... VLC says theres some kind of error. I can't even copy and paste the file from the XP computer to the Windows 7 computer... what's up with that?
Thanks

Latter poster is on the right track ... just to add to it, check your sharing permissions on the Windows XP computer :cheesygri
I have no problems playing files from my XP server on my windows 7 computer.

full permissions set? i guess so... it's shared to everyone.
on my xp machine, everything's open to everyone in the workgroup... they can even edit my files.

I have forgotten a lot of stuff but..
Have you given permission to all users? you may just be giving full permission to the user on Windows XP - but that doesn't mean that the user on Windows 7 will have full permissions as well.
Otherwise I don't see why it wont allow you. Do you know the exact error message that you get when attempting to copy/edit files? we might be able to get a better answer for you then.

windows 7: shows the error message when trying to play it from the shared drive
"File reading failed:
VLC could not open the file "blah"
Your input can't be opened:
VLC is unable to open the MRL "blah". Check the log for details" (what log?)
this next error message is shown when i'm trying to copy a file from windows xp to windows 7:
"You need permission to perform this action
You require permission from the computer's administrator to make changes to this file"
actually windows XP can't see what windows 7 is sharing either:
"\\I7 Machine\Shared Folder" is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.
Access is denied."
