View Full Version : Will not connect to Internet through Ethernet

Hey guys, I have a laptop here that up until today has had a perfect connection to the Internet through its ethernet port/router. I had a static IP set with the default gateway and subnet mask all at confirmed valid values. I took my laptop to school just yesterday, and set the option to "automatically obtain IP address". Unfortunately, I could not connect to the Internet from my school using an Ethernet cable. Today when I got home, I changed all of my previous settings back to what they were before (static IP, valid values), but my PC refuses to connect. I can connect to the router wirelessly just like before (automatically obtaining the IP address), however, with a wired connection I cannot connect to the internet with a static ip, nor by getting the value automatically. For some reason, the computer reads the connection as 2 separate networks, and they both can only connect to the local area network but no the Internet. I am running Vista 64 bit, and my ethernet card is an "Atheros AR8121/AR8113/AR8114 PCI-E Ethernet Controller"
TL;DR Version: My PC refuses to connect to the Internet with a valid static IP and an ethernet connection to my router.
Any and all help is appreciated, I have been trying to fix this for hours!

And you know for a fact that the cable you are using is not faulty? It wouldn't be the first time that a cable, which worked yesterday doesn't work today.
Good luck, hope it is a cable!

I have no definitive proof that the cable is working, but I am about 95% sure. It was working perfectly just a day ago, and I did not even touch it in between yesterday and today. I'm still trying to fix this issue, but no luck. Any help would be appreciated!

Bet you've probably downloaded a trojan. Go to http://www.malwarebytes.org/ and download a free cleaner.

This sounds unlikely to me, but you never know. I was never actually connected to the Internet at my school though. I always have Avast on access scanner running and I never got any warnings of any kind.

open a command prompt and do the following commands:
try pinging a big company site
ping www.cbc.ca
If it can't ping cbc.ca, try pinging an IP address - 92.17.8.80 (cbc.ca)
If you can now ping that it's a DNS problem, now try this:
ipconfig /flushdns
and again try pinging www.cbc.ca
If you still can't do that, try these below:
1) ipconfig /release
2) ipconfig /renew
Hopefully that will reset everything

Ok, I did as you suggested. Unfortunately it still does not work. Here is the CMD record:

last ditch effort is to open up your device manager and uninstall the adapter.
Then uninstall any programs that came with the adapter.
Reboot your PC and let windows detect the adapter. Click cancel when it asks to auto install.
Reinstall the software that came with the adapter and restart
Windows should auto detect and install the adapter.

Your problem is this. Try adjusting some of your router's dhcp settings

Hey guys, I got my internet to work once again; however, I did not actually find a solution to the problem. I resorted to doing a system restore to the day before I took my laptop to school, and then I reset all the values to their original values and did simple "unplug, replug" procedure to my router. Thankfully it worked out by undoing the problem. Alas, I was not able to find a direct solution, but this works too. Thanks to everyone who posted and tried to help me out.

I think we all would be curious to see a new screen shot of the "ipconfig/all" now that things are back to normal.

It could have been a MS update that messed with your wifi card. I've heard this happening before.
