I need to change my rotors (3 hours tops?) but I don't have tools or really even a parking spot.

I was thinking of jacking my car up in the Canadian Tire parking lot and repairing there so I could pick up tools as needed. Any guesses as to wether CT will care?

and will you return the tools when you are finished too?

I've actually seen a few times that CT has signs in their parking lot that car repairs are not allowed on the property. Always ignored them, as I would usually just be doing air filter/wipers/fluids. Lol, never thought of doing real service in the lot before, probably would not be agreeable for them.

Topping up, changing your wipers shouldn't be a problem but actually working on your car, I'm sure they will have a problem. They have signs posted that prohibits this.

Classic RFD!

If you get to the point where you're using jacks someone will probably stop you. Minor stuff should be fine. I often see cars in the lot with the hood up and someone working. Saves you a trip if the part you bought isn't correct.

I saw a guy changing spark plugs once and thought that was a balsy move. It would be hillarious to see someone doing rotors there (and I live in redneck central).

Where are you going to keep your 6 pack cold?

If you go to the back of the parking lot and do ONE WHEEL at a time you will be fine. If you jacked the entire car up I'd imagine you'd draw some attention. If you are thinking of returning the tools afterwards that would be a new low...

3 hours? you've just jinxed yourself if you try to do it there. You know that now it will be a 6+ hours job because you'll break a stud and a disc or two will be seized..

You only need run of the mill tools. It's easier to grab a case of beer and go over to a friend's house who already has the right stuff.

I usually used car washes, nice covered and you can clean car up quickly afterwards.

Now what happens if you get 1/2 way through and they don;t have tool or part in stock??????????

Don't be too quick to judge...Did you know that Canadian Tire lend out automotive tools for FREE? All you have to do is pay them a deposit...you will get that back when you return it...

Wow i dunno if doing that much would be wise in a parking lot lol , mind you i have done starters , alternators . I did have the manager come out and give me grief over changing out a bad voltage regulator once . I just told him i would return the untouched part and go across the road to napa and do it there .

On the other hand i have had good luck doing repairs in a local parts shop in peace river ab , i had my belts sheared off by my fan that came apart , i went in bought the parts and went out and started to install them , the parts counter guy came out and gave me a hand even lol .

I've changed exhaust systems a couple of times in a CT lot. Very handy, could get extra adapters, bolts, etc as I needed them. Did do the tool rental thing from them the first time.

No problems from CT, but then I was under the vehicle, no wheels off or anything. And if something went badly wrong I could still drive (noisily) home. Brake jobs can get more complicated.

walmart lets you camp in their parking lots so i doubt they care about auto repairs.

I seem to recall somebody getting seriously injured while working on his car in a CT parking lot a couple of years back. He was hit by another driver who did not see him. Busy parking lots are not the safest places to be working on your car.

Damn...
Alright, I guess I'll need a new spot.

Didn't know about the tool rental thing - that will be much better for my situation.

Walmart has a policy that you can park your RV overnight in any of their parking lots. Not exactly camping.

Places you could prolly do it at because its hard for them to see/shared parking

Kingston and St. Clair - Parking lot is hectic, no one will see you working

Cederbrae Mall, Lawrence and Markham Rd.- Shared Parking, plus parking can be found on side of store where they dont even look.

Actualy come to think of it, you could prolly do this anywhere

Warden and Eglington - shared parking, easy to hide.
