Stumped -Some sort of bots registering on my blog?

Ever few days I get a variation of this name registering on my Joomla CMS blog.

Name: MerellOlssen
E-mail: merellollsen@mail.ru
Username: MerellOlssen

It's always some sort of jibberish name and there's more than one of them.
I've double checked my security settings, and I make a point to remove the "jibberish" users.

A google search on the name turns up dozens of hits.

Just wondering what this is, because this user does nothing and appears to do nothing on the other places he/she registers.

Is this some sort of botnet, and what would be the point of doing what they are doing?

PS. My blog is empty pretty much so they aren't coming for content!

Had a similar situation when I ran my own forums, even using the special randomized key entry upon registration. (or whatever it's referred to).

I know some bots will register just to leave some spam as their email / website in their "Profile" (on forums), but otherwise they attempt to drop a few spam messages.

However, now that I think of it, I wouldn't be surprised if they scanned the email listings of other members (assuming public display) and spammed them.
