View Full Version : Bank Employees: What Counts as a Transaction?

My gf and I are kind of fed up with PC - not the no-fee part, but the transaction holds part. Transferring directly from my TD bank account to PC results in a 5 day hold - makes no sense when PC clearly has the money and it's already gone from my TD account. Deposits through the ATM I understand, but not direct via banks.

Anyway all that aside, my gf and I are thinking of setting up a joint account with another bank - probably TD, but possibly ScotiaBank or BMO, depending on fees and services and such. Leaning toward TD because I already have an account there, and it'd be easier to transfer funds.

We're considering either a joint savings or a joint chequing account w/ the lowest monthly fee. I know that with a savings account, it's free, but you only get, I think, 2 free transactions per month and after that you're subject to a service charge.

I also know that transferring money INTO the account doesn't count as a transaction; if we transfer money out of the account into my account, that is a transaction; making a debit purchase is a transaction, and so forth. But what else counts? If we withdraw money from a teller rather than the ABM, is that a transaction?

If any bank employee can clear this up (again we're considering all banks, not just TD, so if you work somewhere other than TD please give me your input), I would really appreciate it.

Thanks!!

Anytime money leaves a bank account, excluding service fees, then that counts as a transaction.
So, transfers out, withdrawals, debit use, PADs, cheques, etc. are all transactions.

Okay thanks. You know after looking over TD's services, I'm thinking the best option would be a joint select account (for the free cheques, drafts, certified cheques + other things), and just downgrade my current TD account.

so deposits are not transactions?

Can someone confirm this? I have a Scotia Gain Plan Savings account (2 free transactions per month) and i've always limited myself to 2 transactions thinking when i deposit a check into it, it counts as a transaction.

does it matter if the check is from another bank?

Thanks,

Not true. In business banking, you have to pay for deposits. So it is not ALWAYS free.
