Registering/insuring/testing a foreign car?

Hi,

I have an issue I am trying to resolve. I have a legally imported , uninsured U.S. spec Honda Civic sitting in my parking lot and without plates.

Though it was imported per se, I have yet been unable to take the vehicle to a local CT for an inspection, seeing as I had to return the US plates. However, I first have to get it to a mechanic so as it fix my shoddy attempt at trying to install the DRL module.

How should I proceed? I gather I need insurance first, before I can even get a temporary registration. While insurance cover such a vehicle? Can I only get insurance for 2 months?

Even when I do get a temporary registration;

...do I request a temp registration, or a special permit?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Can't you use the same ins. company that was on the US temp permit when you imported the car into Canada?

I mean they already insured the car once, they shouldn't have a problem doing it again?

US temp permit? It was an American car given as a hand-me-down of sorts. Unfortunately, the American insurance and plates from the car are both long, long gone (since last November).

Just call a local insurance company and have them insure it, it really shouldn't be a problem since it is a vehicle that is legally allowed to be imported to canada according to the RIV. Insurance rates might be a little higher or different (I don't see why) but they should insure it.

Then you need a temp permit, which is good for 10 days and you get from the MTO. Stick that in the window and you can drive around.

I'd look into all the costs though, because 2 months of insurance (with early cancelation penalties) and the temp plates and stuff might be more expensive than haggling with a towtruck driver to have it towed to the local CT or shop. Then just make a deal with the owner/mechanic there to let you leave the car in the lot for a few days after the inspection while you get all the paper work and final insurance that you'd like to go with in order.

In addition, the car won't start. Of I buy Roadside assistance, would they tow it to CT?

They will insure it (I had mine effective the day I had a car imported from my current insurance and yes, a tow truck will tow anything)
