Lets say you get a 68-69 (C+) as a final mark in a class, and you just need that extra push to fulfill gpa requirements. Is it possible to "beg" for that B- or do extra assignments or whatever? I've never done this before so I don't know...I'm at Ryerson if that matters...

Good luck, you better be good at doing stuff under the table.:-0 <===

I'd say 99.9% no once marks are released... try to do it right after you bomb your final. It wouldn't be fair to everyone.

Really depends on the prof.

For example: If you've attended all the classes, showed initiative in learning, were actively participating then yes,

If you skipped a lots of classes, didn't follow the above, then u should beg and see :D

I went to Ryerson too, and some profs were generous and they did that, some didn't.

Good luck.

Many professors are accurate in their marking scheme.

I always had marks around 77-79% (B+) but they never pushed me up to 80% (A-)

Begging profs for marks will work in College. But, rarely happens in University. Maybe 2 out of 10 profs.

In that kind of situation when someone needs a certain grade to reach the minimal requirements to continue in a program, they don't deserve to be in University.

Doesn't hurt to try. Results obviously vary based on circumstances.

Realistically, just try to demonstrate that you're not the typical half assed student that most teachers despise.

On the other hand, if the teacher is a hard marker in general, you're usually screwed.

i tried that with my prof, but he said once the final marks are up on ROSI (i go to UTSC.. not sure what system u guys use) there's nothing he can do, even if he was willing to boost up my mark.

but yeah.. it doesn't hurt to try asking anyway.

+1

The earlier to you talk to profs about your marks, the better. But once the marks are in RAMSS and past the appeal period, the profs can't change them.

-1. profs can submit forms to have the marks changed. my mark showed up on ROSI and it was wrong, i asked the prof for clarification and he found an error when entering marks.

^ Thanks for that info, as I attend UTSC as well. I should really check with one of my profs if my grade is indeed correct, even though it has already been posted on ROSI.

My friend was screwed over he got a 65+ on his final mark for management, which would have meant he got 50% on the exam, which he was sure he didn't. He emailed the prof at UTSC, and they didn't enter his mark correctly which boosted his marks by 10%. So yeah, it'd be good to check.

Remember, its where you rank on the curve. So out of a class of 100, maybe 10 will get A, 30 gets B, 60 gets C and rest D and below.

If you want that extra %, you have to beat the guy/girl who just beat you.

yeah, most profs are nice enough to go over your marks with you and not make you pay the registrar to get a copy of your exam.

Check out your exam.

Otherwise, I find that for 1st/2nd year courses, profs in general are reluctant to bump up any marks (due to mark distributions)

is that only because of an error while entering marks though? can the prof actually do that even though there is no proof that there was any mistake in recording the marks? (ie. prof is just boosting up the mark for the student or something)

no idea, i've never tried it.

If there is any error, check your term marks to see if they are all correct. I was missing almost 10% worth of marks. If I didn't check that, I would have only ended up with a C average.

Once you have all those marks, calculate what possible mark you could have gotten on the final, if something doesn't look right, talk to your prof.

This is going to sound dumb but im not very good at math. Let's assume you get:

80 on an assignment worth 20%
60 on a midterm worth 35%
__ on the final exam worth 45%

and you end up with a 70 final mark. Is this how you would compute the blank?

70 - [(80x.2)+(60x.35)] = ???

That's correct.

X + [(80x.2)+(60x.35)] = 70
70 - [(80x.2)+(60x.35)] = X
33=X

33/45= 73.33% ON Final Exam
