Hello,

I was just wondering if I should go with Bel Air Direct over state farm to save around $20 a month on insurance? Has anyone had problems with Bel Air when they went for a claim? In addition, would you have any liability on a car with 250,000 kms for 2002 Honda Civic?

Thanks

My girlfriend is currently with Belair. She had her first claim in November, Belair advertised that the first accident does not affect your premium. Sure enough her renewal for next month has gone from 125 per month to 206. When she called they were not in the least bit helpful.

Their rates are aggressive.... until that first claim.

Call a Broker who deals with several different companies and see what type of rates are available to you. :)

Did she not have accident protector???Was it not put on the application she signed. Have her check her copy of the auto application they gave her.

I'll definitely double check that with her, thanks for the heads up.

They were advertising it but if it wasnt on the contract she signed, then they dont have to give it to her...

As for Belair, I have been with them for two years, and no claims yet.

My buddy who is also with them had a jerk key his car from rear fender to front fender on his tiburon. He made the claim, they covered it all and no increase.

He said they were pretty helpful to resolve the claim.

They had me go do that also. They do this in case you want to claim something that has already happened. Make sure you get a car wash beforehand so that you avoid the inspector telling you to go clean it.

The rates have likely gone up for reasons other than the accident...rates have been going up generally as the economy goes down.

I had a VERY good experience with Belair...they always provided me great prices and were great in the one claim I had.

My rates have never gone up with Belair, only down. I was suprised to hear many people were seeing increases.

I have state farm, surprisingly they offered me a much much better rate than bel air when I first bought a car in 2007. couple of months ago, I got a letter that rates are increasing across the board, and sure enough, my premium increased (but not enough to make me look elsewhere yet).

I have written many clients that were previously with them, but I do not know them myself as I am a broker - they only sell one product where I have access to several different companies.

Currently with bel air, no claims yet. Have found them to be extremely helpful, and yes my vehicle required an inspection as well. (97' Civic Si coupe 250km)

Actually, even if you do have it in the contract, there is nothing stopping them from saying that this is a "regular" increase because the area in which you are living has become a high risk area. I am not sure if one can actually verify this somehow but in the end there is no way to know whether they do increase your premium due to the accident or due to the other circumstances. At least I don't know a way.

I am with Belair, only claimed a windshield chip repair once - no problems at all.

On a side note, my advice to everyone who does not have home/tenant insurance: get a quote and see what the combined price will be if you have both your car insurance and home/tenant insurance with the same company. I just signed up for it because apparently, the sum of tenant and car insurance turned out less than my auto insurance alone! It happens like this quite a lot so it's worth a shot to check the quotes.

I highly doubt this company had over a 60% rate increase...thats insane.. FSCO would never allow that!! Buddy's rate almost doubled! clearly it would be visable on the policy showing the accident affecting the rates.

comprehensive claims do not go against you unless you've had several.

You are correct on looking into a property policy, alot of the time the premium for the tenants policy equals the multi policy discount on the auto, so in fact the tenants policy is basically free.....

I switched to Belair Direct (they had a corporate deal with my employer) in 2007, and saved several hundred dollars that year in reduced premiums. In 2008, they increased my premiums ~3%, I called them to inquire why they increased my rates when I had not made any claims, the rep couldn't give me a clear explanation why. I could only think of 2 possible reasons, they did a bait and switch on me, or the risk associated in my address increased.

You may want to shop around with a BROKER who has several different companies available to them for quoting.
