How much should this job cost (hours wise)

Hi all:

How much should the following cost to replace, in hours of labour?

-Bearings all around
-Brakes all around (Front brakes=disc, pads Rear brakes= drums, shoes)
-Replace driver axe
-oil pan

on a toyota tercel '98?

I dont really need the axle changed, it just seemed much cheaper (time wise) to replace the whole axle than mess with the torn CV boot.

How long would be just the bearings+brakes?

Err... the car is small, that is one thing going for you. The parts are very reachable.

The brakes are the easiest part and can probably be done within 1 hour. The oil pan is probably 2 hours to 4 hours depending on how skilled the mechanic is.

The wheel bearings or strut bearings? Either way most of the labour involves taking things apart to replace a part that otherwise takes 5 minutes.

Leaving it for the day or two is probably realistic. Visit some TERCEL forums and maybe they'll have some how-to's or something else you might be able to get a better idea with.

all those jobs are very easy... any good mechanic could knock it out in a couple of hours.. 4-5 max.

now if you are asking, how many hours they will bill you, that's a different number...

Yes, smart move to just have a recon axle fitted, especially if you don't know how long the boot has been torn and letting crud in.

Can be cheaper because of the time factor as you say.

As to total hours for everything, you have to factor in the time to order parts - a good independent shop will check around to get the best price for you on an axle, oil pan, wheel bearings, brake pads, rotors, etc.
Some people expect a shop to somehow do this as a freebie.

Total billable time I would say is at least 7 hours.

Brakes all-around is about 3 hours (that's how much i got billed and I felt ripped off)..

The pan, I changed it myself on a similar Tercel some time ago.. In a garage, it can be done in under an hour - drop the exhaust, bolt off the pan, wait an hour for oil to decrease dripping, put sealant on the new pan, torque it back in, then wait 8 hours (overnight?) for the sealant to set... Don't forget to put oil in and change the filter..

For the other stuff, I don't know.. It's truly dirty job dealing with CV boots and similar..
