View Full Version : Rogers Increases Internet Speed

I got a notice in my browser saying my 'Express' Tier Internet service is moving from 7 Mbps to 10 Mbps at no additional cost starting June 5th... I searched online and found a little blurb news article, however, the article says May 29th, the notice I got in my browser says June 5th.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Rogers Cable Communications today announced that it is boosting the download speed of its two most popular Internet services, effective immediately. Rogers Hi-Speed Internet Express will increase from 7 Mbps to 10 Mbps, and Rogers Hi-Speed Internet Lite will increase from 1 Mbps to 3 Mbps. The service enhancements are being introduced at no extra charge to residential customers and are expected to be in place by May 29.

I agree with JAC 100%
60 gig cap prevents you from truly using that speed to its potential.
I also need consistency in speed. Seems to drop off sharply during evenings and weekends.

This is why I ALWAYS say a DSL connection is better then a Cable cause you never lose bandwidth on DSL vs with cable as you stated your speed can drop to nothing anytime.

No, Rogers does not compensate for anything. The only reason why we're getting this upgrade is because Bell now has a 10Mbps internet plan in the $45 range so Rogers can't lag behind with 7Mbps only. If customers benefit accidentally, good for us. But believe me, Rogers didn't do it with the INTENTION of us benefiting.
Here's Bell Max 10 service. It's 10Mbps down, 1Mbps up with 100GB cap. It's a much nicer service but the $43/month price is just temporary. Then it goes to $53/month.

I will now be able to reach my cap in 13hrs and 20mins versus 19hrs and 2mins.
Still doesn't help me - they've overloaded my area now so during peak times I max out at 400kB/s. I'd rather a bump to 100GB cap then more speed.

Rogers has nothing to fear from bell in my area, as the entire subdivision( which is only 20 years old) is limited to less than 1Mbit down due to old cables.. my lines were tested to be good at 670Kbit, and Bell does not seem to want to update the lines anytime soon.. I am sure the same holds true for many areas :(
So what changes with the existing 10Mbit service.. will it get boosted to 13Mbit, or more?

Yup, same for my area, but my area is even older (40 yr old?)
Doesn't seem so yet... Link (http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r22422711-Extreme-Extreme-13Mbs)

No increase in upload speed? :(
And no increase in bandwidth either. This is a jib. On the old Extreme with 10mbps, they had 95GB bandwidth. To be fair Express with 10mb should now have 95GB and the new Extreme 13mb should have 120/130GB to make everything fair.

So us Extreme suscribers get jipped? Still 10/1 with a 95GB cap?
Seems like the difference between 59.99 and 46.99 is now 35GB of cap space and 500kb upload.

If you don't care about upload speed, just move your service to express.
Then assume the $25 overage and go nuts, downoad everything you want. You will end up saving money.
$46 + $25 = $71
The cost of Extreme is a few dollars less.
Might as well go with express.

How can you possible use 60gigs in less than a day?
Downloading RAW files off a backup server sucks up bandwidth quickly - did that last month. It's not that I use all of my bandwidth in a day, it's just an observation that the speed increase really isn't that useful to people who need to transfer more than 60GB of data per month - just means we can burn through it faster.
At this point, I'd rather move to burstable billing.

This makes switching to Teksavvy a little more difficult as their downloads speeds are technically half at 5mbps download. I usually don't hit the current 60GB cap, for what its worth.

My speed has been increased from 7 to 10 since last year.
I've hit the 60GB cap much more faster each month... eventually my cap was raised to the 95GB limit.
They were probably like "Oh, this dude keeps hitting his cap every month.. lets be nice and increase it so he doesn't pay so much when he hits the cap!"
Yet I still hit the cap. :)

Not really; they want to get everyone off the 95GB cap and down to 60GB like Bell. Once enough people do that, they'll eliminate Extreme (or rather, enhance our service by restricting bandwidth to heavy users) and start to assf**k anyone who goes over the cap.
The end is coming.

Their 15MB is actually Fiber optic lines if I am not mistaken.
Where do you think the fibre optic lines are? Bell fibre optic lines bypass their crappy outside plant because it can't support any kind of speed to your neighbourhood. So they launch the DSL beside the phone terminals for the neighbourhood instead, then the loss begins. VDSL can give you 52 meg at 1000'... under ideal conditions. The more customers using DSL in the same cable bundle, the more interference, the slower you go. Realistically Bell could probably deliver a good 20-24 meg or slower to a house in a small subdivision.
The large green boxes in a buried wire neighbourhood are Rogers fibre hubs. In a new subdivision you will see even more of them. The hubs can be split to have four return paths (Rogers uses broadcast to deliver most of your services, so it is not required to split the info flowing to your house). In a neighbourhood with overhead wires, the fibre hubs can be in the air, in a large green cabinet, or mixed.
Bell's fibre optic network definitely helps them out, but it is not one upping the competition as they would have all of us think. The sad reality is one single cableco channel can do 38 Meg with no distance limitations and the next generation of modems has multiple channels bonding down and up.
Whoever develops a new technology to force more data down the skinny phone wires will be king...

Sort out your line with the techs at Rogers first.
I was experiencing lots of disconnections, so I had a tech come in Friday to take a look.
He said the cable running outside my home inside to the fuse box (where it splits to the entire home) was too old and had to be replaced. Going to be hell of a DIY. Or who should I consult to get the cable fishing done?
He also replaced the splitters in my house. Helped tremendously, to my surprise. I no longer disconnect so I am happy for the time being.
Before the tech came in, I had Rx Power at around -17dB, and Tx Power at 55.2dB.... now the Rx is around -11dB, but the Tx stayed the same.
Still borderline, but at least I can squeeze out the full 10/1 of Extreme. Just need it to be more stable.

Typical contractor move, he just replaces everything that was easy and leaves your house still out of spec. Your modem is still a fail by Rogers "specs", but as you discovered it can still go full speed out of spec. Your modem is maxed out at 55.5 and is telling you the return path to Rogers is not up to par. It has increased it's TX to try and compensate. You either have a crappy connection/splitter going to the box on the side of your house, or the wire to your house is no good.

You should... I lived in Don Mills/Eglinton East. Maxed my DL and UP rates in my apartment.

I don't have 13mbps yet, so this will change for those who are on the Extreme plan starting June 1st?
- check my area (M3C1C8) still has 10mbps on extreme but express increased to 10mbps.
If Extreme does not upgrade... Then Express would be better if you going over bandwidth usage limit of $25 extra than extreme with 10mbps downstream. In terms of cost.
Then again... Upload rates on express is pretty low of 512kbps compared to 1mbps on extreme. This would be a concern if you have a website or other things you need to share.
err... hopefully extreme upgrade activates in my area....

Hmm, I only chuckled at "end was coming" - wasn't my intention to make light of your comment :o
At least the speeds are going up, right? The caps are dismal, but that's to be expected.
Well, there's some confusion as to whether the Extreme tier speed is going up, unfortunately, but yes, the cap is the main bottleneck. I am loath to downgrade to Express, because I do think Rogers is going to start suspending cap violators, or remove the $25 surcharge limit.
I haven't heard any news as to whether Bell will get away with capping their resellers or not, or I'd be looking into Teksavvy, even though I'd take a significant hit in speed.

Mm, me neither. A speed increase to 13mbps would pretty much solidify my interest in Extreme for now, otherwise I would consider going down to Express too.
I wouldn't have moved from TSI but for some reason my DSL line was acting up.
Ah well. We'll hear news about the tariff in a few days I think... haven't been following up since I moved ISP's!

A question for those with Rogers internet:
Did you have to pay $50 for installation? I'm being told on the phone by a Rogers sales rep that installation costs $50, but why can't I self-install for free?
He is telling me that $50 is mandatory and I can't just do it myself...but nowhere does it state this.

There are promotions out there that will waive off that (but you have to pay a $14.95 activation fee) and also 3 months free. If you haggle with them, you could possible get this since Rogers always promote it.

You should have asked them these questions.
I am going to buy and ask not to charge it as its not written in the flyer.

Funny how they never mention this mandatory installation fee anywhere.
I'd rather just do it myself for free.

If you see the flyer it says "Rogers makes it possible to Install your own Internet and Save BIG! with modem kit"...So I presume there is no installation charges.

Thanks for the reply champlin,
That was also what I thought too, but when I called in for more info (considering signing up, but haven't yet), the sales rep gave me a big story of how this installation fee was mandatory. From what I'm told, they charge you this fee even if you install yourself, which seems unfair.
Best to call in and complain, I guess. :(

If you're renting the modem, they always send a tech thus you pay the $50 installation cost. If you buy the modem you can do the self-install.

thanks for the reply.
I bought the grab&go kit, so I'm planning on setting it up myself.
The Rogers guy kept on insisting that a tech do it for $50 because the location that I currently want internet setup at is "cold" (I'm not sure what he means by this, it's not as if the area is rural, we're in a city apartment). Not sure if he was trying to get me to pay more money for something I could do myself, so wanted to check here.

The only benefit a tech provides (unless the customer is a complete noob) is to check signal levels and pull a new cable from the demarc point if required.
Whatever you do, do NOT allow the tech to install the crapware on your computer.

but...

the download speed seems to be wayyy out of line with what other people on extreme are getting.
could it be because i'm on wifi on my laptop right now?
i'll try it with my desktop later on, which has a wired connection.
just curious.

Kind of weird, since I thought they randomize the data they transfer to avoid caching like this.

anyway i can guarantee you that i am definately not getting the kind of speed that speedtest.net is showing.

Do you use Avira? When I do the test with Avira, it downloads through webguard so I get nothing for about 5-10 seconds and then it just says some crazy number above 200MB/s. Disabling webguard gave me my 10MB/s speed.

I'm using the Scientific Atlanta modem from the promotion last year (that applies to new and existing customers). Call in rogers and ask about a modem exchange maybe.

Is yours dpc2100 as well? Cause I (think) that's what rogers supplied us with, this must've been way back I don't remember how we got this modem anymore and I'm not sure it supports 10mbps. At any rate I'm having a technician come look at our cables today

Yeah the DPC2100R2 supports it, I just got it from the internet grab and go kit.

I just downgraded my service from Extreme to Express. The $13 a month savings sounds good to me. Even if the Extreme was 13mb, it is pointless since with the caps, you just get to the speed faster :D

omg.
WOW.
The rogers tech guy just finished up. Former speed was 2.5 mbps dl at most....now 9.84 mbps, the way it's supposed to be. What a wake up call-everybody should use speed checks often; I can't believe I didn't even know about it and just assumed I was getting the proper speed.
It was the coaxial cable that was changed...he said we had a very poor quality coaxial cable. I don't understand though...I thought that was the cable rogers supplied us with, but he said when we split it all over the house my dad must've used cheaper cables and it became lousy...I don't know about that though the renovation was long ago I don't even nkow which cables were used. Well he gave us a different one now but its onlyin the basement.
Any chance you think rogers would discount us for all those months (who knows how long) we must've paid for express but really only must've gotten like 2-3 mbps.
mcg
Jun 8th, 2009, 03:51 PM
^ lol I think that would be your own problem since you did the cabling, while they were providing you 10mbps down all along, hahaha.
It's like you order a Big Mac combo but you only eat the Big Mac. Gonna get a refund on the fries and drink? :D
But you're lucky... the tech told me to replace my cables too because I have a very high Transmit Power Level... ~55dBmV... which is borderline, if not already over spec.
Same with my Receive, it's at -10dBmV.
Problem is, the cable runs through the wall from the basement where it is split into (3), then split again into (2) in the room where the cable modem is. Bah.

I have been with Rogers Extreme for almost 8 months now and honestly, I'm very pleased. It never disconnects, I always max my 10/1 and best of all, torrents work just fine with me. I used to use bell and it gives me nothing but trouble...I ordered that 7mbps plan and I couldn't get over 2.8mbps. lol.
It was because of the lines near my house. I really hope I get that 13mbps upgrade soon. ^_^

Even though the speed testers show 9s as mbps dl, do you ever get these speeds in real-world applications? For example I'm downloading CS:source right now through steams online account, and I did the same w/ WC3, and both downloads still went 1-2 mbps. What about torrents, anybody actually get 10 mbps when actually downloading stuff? The speed tester results are very different from when you actually download large files.

umm, have considered that in order to get full speed, the other side has to offer it?
Just because you can download 10 mbps, doesn't mean the site you connect to will give you 10 mbps. If they gave all their speed to a few customers, then they would get hosed pretty quick.

Try getting something from nvidia or microsoft. I usually max out my connection from either one of them.

I always hit max speed. When I was updating games on steam, it showed 1.12MB/s :D
I also use IRC and torrents quite a bit and I always manage to hit 10Mb/s (1.12MB/s)
Also if using direct downloads, I use DAP. always fast.

I'll +1 that. Altho you pay a premium for rogers the service is always available at max speed and I've rarely experienced more than 2 hours downtime over the last 7 or 8 whatever years.
I get teh same speeds 100% of the time the above poster quoted.
