I submitted my tax return at the middle of March. It's now almost June, and I haven't heard a word.
What's the status of your return?

May 27th, 2009, 01:30 AM
Yes, I have received mine, 13 days after I filed.
Did you paper file?
Was it your first time filing?
Were you filed up to date when you filed? Only filed for 2008 tax year?
Any time outside of the country?
Call CRA at 1-800-959-8281 and ask them whats up if they received your return. You could have simply been selected at random for pre-screening.

My accountant filed mine back in March and I received my cheque about 4 weeks later. If you filed yours in April, you probably won't see your refund at least until June or even July.

I paper filed and it took about 6 weeks. No big deal.
Who are the fools that e-filed with H&R Block, paid a hefty fee and lost some income due to their tax-filing incompetence?

I'm not sure what's going on either. I filed my whole family including my fiancee's tax return in April minutes apart from each return. Everybody has gotten their return a couple weeks ago but him (roughly 2 weeks turnaround time). I told him to call today to see what's up with that as we want our money!

Well based on some of the replies I won't get so hopeful while checking the mail. I filed a cpl of weeks ago by paper. This year I used an accountant as my return was too complex for my wee brain.
I'm getting back almost 8,000 so that's ok. I want the cash asap as I want to invest.

I filed my 2007 paper documents on May 3, and got the refund a week and a half later.
I filed my 2008 e-files on the 13th of May, no refund yet. :(
I guess e-filing takes longer to get a refund, since i did not mail in my tuition, RRSP documents.

I efiled with H&R Block, because I worked for them. Nothing wrong with H&R Block as long as you have a person who knows what they are doing. Yes, many of the employees are less knowledgeable than your average Joe, but many know more than most accountants. If you are checking over your return before they submit it, instead of just signing documents without looking, then there shouldn't be a problem. If you look it over, it simply saves you time and trouble of doing it yourself. And the fee isn't much for most people, $40-$50.

Pre-assessment. I would almost bet on it. How are you getting almost $8,000 back?! That is an immediate red flag and the return has to be checked manually, and they will probably request a lot of supporting documents. Your accountant who filed should be checking this for you.

Efiling and netfiling are the fastest ways for refunds, unless you get pre-assessed.

Some factors that affect processing time of tax returns
efile/netfile 2-4 weeks
paper file 4-6 weeks (closer to 6 if near deadline)
First time filing? must be paper filed and things need to be checked
Applying for disability or dependent with disability. This takes really long.
If you have abnormal claims on return, they ask to provide proof. like people that make $5,000-$10,000 donations and only make 30k
Calculation errors. Also require somebody to go back and look over
sending to wrong tax centre, obviously has to be rerouted
having previous account balance or problems.
some returns are randomly selected for closer review. has nothing to do with taxpayer
Normal adjustments take about 8 weeks

I have been happy in the past, getting refund for my school loan. I had to pay back this time around. Too bad, should've contributed more to my RRSP.

I got 6k back and netfiled but took 1.5 weeks for them to deposit the money into my account. We're getting massive returns because of the years of tuition credits we've saved up :D 'sigh' I hope my fiancee's massive cheque didn't get "lost". I found out yesterday that two of my credit card's been compromised AND I'm not getting some credit card statements!!!!>:(>:( I so rather a re-assessment or he got manually chequed instead of a lost cheque right now.
Anybody got through to CRA lately? My fiancee tried many times today and couldn't get through the phone. Will try again tomorrow to hopefully get through and talk to somebody about this.

I filed mine via NetFile on April 15th. It's been over a month and I still haven't got anything in the mail. When I checked the online status of my tax return this morning it said that my refund was assessed and mailed out April 23rd, 2009. So I called up CRA and they said their going to send me some letter or something which I have to mail back that says I didn't get the cheque or that it wasn't cashed, and then they'll send me out a replacement.
I hope this process doesn't take too long... I've got rent to pay. :(

I used QuickTax to do and handed in the paper copies.
My last previous time was about 9 years ago. Then left the country and just relocated back here in a recent year.
I handed in 3 years 2006, 2007 and 2008 together. Everything submitted around Mar 15. Still no words as of today May 28.
sigh! I just hate doing income tax

You people get money back? Crazy.
Generally though it's better when government is not holding your cash hostage.

No difference between netfile or paper file or efile or telefile when it comes to checking the status of your return. If you are registered with "My Account" with service canada, you can check it.
Easiest way is to call CRA general inquiries @ 1-800-959-8281 and ask them if they received/processed your return.

Did you call the number I told you to call? They will let you know what is up for sure. When you left the country, did you notify CRA? If not, you may owe for previous debts that you didn't know you have.
They may also be preparing a request to file for the previous years.
There are so many scenarios, honestly, you can't expect them to finish processing that many returns in a situation like yours in less than 1-2 months.

I mailed in my paper return on Apr. 21. Still nothing yet. I'm a first time filer since I left the country 10+ years ago to go to the US after high school and just came back. The crappy thing is, I can't check my status since signing up online for an epass requires last year's (2007) line 150 amt...and I don't have a return from last year.

I adjusted for '07 because I missed a moving deduction/credit ( I moved to Japan). I was told they would not even be looking at my request until September '09 at which point I would probably get some carry forward amount. This was back in March.

.
I sold some rental property so I had to factor in capital gains. As well my wife was running a home day care. Keeping track of reciepts, and writing off house hold expenses just was a pain in the a$$
As for the $8,000 I invested $100,000 in to my wife and my own rrsp. I hadn't really been contributing thus far so we had lots of room.
I did not feel comfortable with this years return. I figured if I messed it up they would be knocking at my door pretty quickly.
I stopped by H&R prior to using the accountant and when I asked the lady some questions bout capital gains she turned to her computer and stared at it. She also sain ummm ummm ummm for litterly a minute and a half straight. Finally I said that's ok and walked away lol.

If you ever return to HR Block, make sure you ask for a "senior preparer", and ask how many years they have been with the company. Must be 6+ years with HR before I would trust them with my return, and even then, I would look it over.

I still haven't received mine, so i decided to call in today and it seems like it was issued and mailed out on May 7th and I still haven't got it.
Rep said it might've been lost in transit.
They will have to mail me some legal documents stating that i haven't cashed the money and investigate to confirm that and mail another one out to me.
Now the waiting continues.
