I also need help...
I'm stressing about whether i should take summer school or not to upgrade my mark. I live in ontario so we dont do provincial exams.
I'm applying in oct for ubc (2010 school year) and I really need to get in.
I heard that for arts you need like an 85-90 to get in..but I read somewhere else that they give scholarships to people with those avgs.

I fast tracked a bunch of courses and have already a few grade 12 credits.
History gr.12 (90)
English gr. 12 (86)
Law(92)
what do you guys think? will I get in? or should i take another summer school. im pretty sure next semester...i'll get all low 90s mid 90s even..

also when do acceptances come out? i need to decide by like march/aprilish next year.

Don't worry about it, UBC Arts is easy to get into.
90%+ will get you $2000, not sure about 85%+.

You find out with the instant system - as soon as you get your Spring interim marks, you shove them in the computer and it tells you whether you're in or not.

Law 12 isn't a provincially examinable course, so UBC won't look at that during the admissions process. That being said, it will help in the sense that you won't have to take as many courses next year, so you'll be able to concentrate more on the ones that you do have.

UBC Arts is an easier faculty to get into than say, Science, but it's not a cakewalk. When I got accepted in '07, the cutoff was about 82. My younger brother got in this year and according to him, the cutoff was 83%. As long as you keep an A average, you should be fine.

One thing I would reccommend is that you consider taking a language 12 course next year. I know only a language 11 is required for admission, but Arts students usually need to complete a 1st or 2nd-year language course to graduate with an Arts degree. Of course you can always do that later (even in fourth year), but if you're a person who's not that great at languages, you might want to think about taking a language 12 next year. It's better to get it over with in high school than to screw up in Uni and have it affect your GPA.

If you're good at a certain language though, it may be worth it for you to take it in Uni as a GPA-booster.

Try and strive for a 90% average up until self-reporting starts, because that nets you a $2000 scholarship and priority for residence. Back in '07 it used to be 86% for $2000, but I guess with the recession and all they didn't have as much money, so they bumped it down to $500.

Good luck!
