I need help.

I am in a situation where my parents are forcing me to go to U of T St. George into Life Sciences. I have ABOSOLUTE not interested in this field, future job prospects of "doctor". What bull, I know I have no chance and don't even want to become one. They have just accepted the U of T offer. Only thing I can think of is fail hard enough in first year where their delusions of being a doctor are shattered and hopefully I can do what I want?

What are my options?

Tough situation to be in! How come you are not into life science or being a doctor? How old are you?

What exactly is it that you want to do personally? Don't purposely fail, at least try so in the event that you do fail, they'll have an easier time accepting that life sci might not be for you rather than just thinking that you're lazy.

Anyways I think you can still accept different offers until the deadline on OUAC (It was end of May last year I think, or try calling the universities). Just tell your parents that it will be hard for you to succeed in something that you have absolutely no interest in. Worse comes to worst, you try life sci for a year and there might be a chance that you'll like it even if you aren't necessarily good at it.

Well, science is alright i guess. Personally i just don't want to be around sick people, or touching people. I am 18. And I have seen my brother go through this and he has failed but continues to try to become one. I just don't see the point. I truly really don't have a huge preference towards any particular career but i don't want to waste 6+ years of my life trying to get my parents "status". If you know what i mean.

So to be frank then.... why did you even apply to life sciences? Or for that matter to uni at all if you have no idea what interests you or even a general idea about what you want to do?

You need to grow up. I'm not being harsh, I'm serious.

This may cause unrepairable damage between you and your parents. You may have to leave your home and support yourself financially. I realize it won't be a pleasant situation, but at some point it time you need to start making your own decisions. The decision as to which university to attend and what degree to pursue, seems like a good time to start.

I realize there may be cultural pressures that would make the decision to defy your parents more difficult than it would be for many other people. But you need to make a decision as to whether you are going to let your life be ruled by cultural pressures, or whether you will lead your own life. The decision is not going to get any easier in the future. A don't see what you're going to gain by putting it off.

Theres the dilemma. ^ This isn't new and has been "discussed". I have to see, is this the best decision for me. Am i supposed to take a McDonald's job for the rest of my life because i constantly disagree with them. I don't know the logistics behind it either.

Can't you just change your course once your in? Since it's your 1st year you have so many choices to choose from.

lol, this isn't going to go well with your parents but your going to have to tell them you have no interest in health sciences. You have to grow a spine, speak up and run your own damn life.

off topic:
I'm going to take a shot in the dark and assume your either "Asian" or "Brown".

Move out?

Or if you really can't afford it, just switch into something else without telling them. How would they know?

Work when you can. Work every summer. Take a year off between third and fourth years to work. Move out as soon as possible.

I mean, if your parents really loved you, they'd let you do what you want, right?

I'd say suck it up and give it a shot. A shot at being a doctor is much better than a year in poli sci/anthropology/psychology etc. esp from a great program at one of the top universities in the country. You can always transfer after your first year but what if you get med school type grades first year? Why wouldn't you give it a shot? You might be smarter than your brother (you did get in to UTSG Life Sci for a reason) so listen to your parents. I know this may sound strange in today's culture, but if it wasnt for them you wouldn't be here in the first place and they've raised you from birth and they only want what's best for you. Believe it or not, a lot of parents would force their kids into similar programs perhaps because the financial rewards and the prestige are almost unmatched. I get the feeling that you have a negative attitude because you perceive med school as an unreachable goal, but that is far from the case (esp when you had good enough marks for utsg). Good luck!

Pay for your own education.
Unless your parents are paying, they should have no say.

Hopefully you have savings or you can get enough OSAP though.

But just talk to your parents first and foremost. Let them know exactly how you feel and show them your alternative choices and why/how that would work out. Let them know that you know what you have in hold for your own future and that it is your decision. Tell them you appreciate their guidance and help, but it is your life.

I'm a life sci student at st. george.

Don't enter this program unless you love the sciences/health sciences. Getting in isn't very difficult (85%+), however doing well enough for medical school is very difficult. If you don't have the motivation and drive to be at the top of your class, then medical school (at least in Canada) is a very unrealistic goal.

I've gotten in with an 82% average and I am not a fan of the sciences except for Bio. But that’s only because I could do well in it with little effort. Not a good reason and I have told this to my parents. But they believe that U of T is some amazing uni., unparallel to anything else.

And talking is done. Done over and over and over again. No help. I just end up back in the same place.

Don't fail. If you fail, then UofT might not let you come back for another program.

You can go to class and take some courses that interest you

or

you can find out the drop date deadline -
- drop your courses or withdraw from the program
and get a full refund
no point in wasting money by failing courses

what career program interests you?

there are other careers besides doctor

It's a privilege to go to University of Toronto
so don't throw it away carelessly

Find out how to switch programs- read the university handbook or ask the registrar office or a counselor

Hey, you know what would be a perfect job for you

pharmacist!

You don't have to touch people.

The salary is awesome - around $80 000, $90 000, $100 000, $150 000

You just have to work hard to get high marks-
Limited space in the program.

hey i was in the exact same situation
heres what happened to me
last year i got accepted to engineering at st. george my parents since I was born they wanted me to be an engineer, i thought i wanted to be a journalist or maybe commerce, my parents allowed me to apply to numerous universities and i got into 95% of them, but when i got my acceptance to engineering it was as if i didnt apply to anything else, that was my path. So i decided to give it a try. at u of t you are able to change your mind within 4-5 weeks of commencement of class. So i went, i hated it..i didnt mind the calculus, everything else was soo (excuse my analogy) gay. so i told my parents straight up you can decide what you want for me, im going into commerce, so i did, and i enjoy it very much....my parents at first told me they were concerned they wanted me to succeed and aaccording to parents you can only succeed in certain ways, MD, pharmacist, lawyer, politician etc... I told them that if they wanted me to be successful I need to be happy.....my suggestion when you select your classes apply to other courses you may be interested in, com101h1, if your interested in commerce, english courses.
if you fail out this year it can affect your academic career so be careful. drop the classes before the drop date...good luck
just tell them you are not happy. if they love you then they will want you to be happy.

Your problem is you don't even know what you want to do. Nothing says immature child going through rebellious stage in life like aforementioned situation. You're basically okay with studying whatever except for what your parents want. I personally recommend you take a year or two off to travel or work for some good perspective. You've probably gone through life being told what to do at every decision by your parents, never giving you the chance to figure out what you are actually interested in. There is no rush in going to university, especially when you aren't ready.

Last I check your university acceptance has to be signed by you. Through the PIPE act, and you being 18, the registrar is not allowed to divulge any information to anyone except yourself, it is against the law.

So how exactly does one's parents already accept into UofT. Did they offer you a car and had the paper and carkeys in front of you?

What other programs or universities did you get accepted to?

If it's possible-
accept another offer and cancel the life science UofT offer.

Good post!

Parents take note- let your kids make their own decisions.
Give your kids the power to make their own decisions.

Or else the kids will end up being helpless and unable to make their own decisions.
