How much is the 7 course tasting menu ?
I'm thinking of going, but I'm not sure if it would make a difference to go on a Saturday verus weeknight.
Susur does not work on the weekends. Anyone gone on a weekend?

We went twice a couple of years ago on a saturday night and we saw Susur each time.
A few weeks ago, I made reservations there (I later cancelled them) and I have never talked to such a hoyty toyty stuck up reservation taker. I didn't realize he was doing me a favour by answering the telephone.

I use to know this, but I cant remember. $120 sounds familar. Someone correct me if I am wrong.
Never been to Susurs, I need to someone to expense a lunch there with me. ;) Ive seen him drive by in his BMW convertible. I think it was a M3.
List of achievements on his webpage http://www.susur.com/reviews.html is impressive.

Well i did not know he was that good all i knew he was a rogue Chef which is my type of guy.
Ah i collect S Class Mercedes and have a home and Business in the Caribbean so he can't really test me there besides BMW's are for school teachers.HaHaHa.
Seriously i have heard that his tasters menu is a bargain though.
The proof of the pie is in the eating so i'll be the judge of that and all those accolades don't add up for me unless i taste.
Tony Bourdain ever been to his place?
Is JLunar Banned?
Where is she?

We went a couple of months ago and the 7 course menu was $110. More than filled me up but I'm not a big eater. Best food I've had in Toronto. I heard the only better place is Eigensinn Farm, but I'm having trouble getting reservations.

They claim ther is'nt a better place.
If you're a vegetarian it costs $75.00 for the 7 course.

yeesh, talk about this when I'm away, do ya!?!
Susur's has got that white on white decor with a cool light that changes colour.
Tasting menu is around $120 last I went a couple years back.
Eigensenn's was really nice to go to, but it's far. Veeery tasty though. :) and the meal is HUGE. I remember thinking, "ah, good, I needed some time to walk around before dessert." when they told us to go walking for 20 minutes... before serving us the main.
O_o!!! <-- full.

ok so i went last night to celebrate my birthday.........for the record people used to pm others on this site to wish them a happy one........no more just shows what it has become.
The man is really good,i was not too overly impressed but he is indeed good.
My companion is raw food so he was challenged and passed with colours.
After he took me for a tour of the kitchens that join both restaurants, the one next dor is also his.
I'll check it out next time, it caters to a more upbeat crowd.
I was the only person with a smile in the rest to tell you.
I will go back again.
The price is a bargain considering what you get and having a chef of that calibre behind the controls.
As for Decor it could be better.

Happy Belated!
That's cool you got a tour of the kitchens!
For those who don't know, Susur opened up a smaller restaurant you can check out next door.
mentioned in NOW --> http://www.nowtoronto.com/issues/2004-09-23/goods_freshdish.php
I may go sometime. Taaasty.

Trini,
Did you order the tasting menu? I think he bumped up the prices over the summer... Was the restaurant busy during your visit?
trini

Tasters menu is all he actually has, he does not have a menu like regular restaurants, you can just pop in and check it out yourself to see what i mean, you won't see what is being served, you need to ask.
He is straight to the point.
Bar is very small,no coctails etc........wines but thats how he makes money.
I had the 7 course.
My companion requested raw food when she booked a week ago..........
Like i said it's an at least try once place and if it's not for you next door might be up your alley.........i think he knew i was an iron Chef before i told him,i could tell he went all out.
He is quite verse in microbiotic and such and worked with alot of Trinidadians and West Indians among other credis which he has.......He knows we jam Soca and Reggae in the Kitchens too.
Thnak you Jlunar i miss you on these boards but i don't blame you for hybernating.

A la Carte yes i missed it as my friend who accompanied me had a raw food 7 course specially prepared for her hence the reason i decided to go with the 7 course tasters but it's still great anyway and he insisted i tried the tasters menu.
Thanks all i'm back from Cancun!

The restaurant is always booked especially some people tend to go almost every day they can afford it.
To me he was an exceptionally nice guy.
Both restaurant kitchens are joined and there are about 25 people so who who i saw working behind there and thats not including the servers just kitchen staff.
It really does not get any better than this however his partners decorating has to get a medal for the absolute worst decor in both restaurants.

Is Susur Lee that chinese guy with the ponytail? I always wanted to try his stuff. Do you actually get full from the taster's menu and do you have to dress up for his restaurants?
trini
Feb 2nd, 2005, 01:29 PM
He has the art locked down very well.
chances are you will be full by the 5th rouund.
You must have a seriously large gut to go all the way and not be full.
No you don't really have to dress up but it might help if you dont dress like a ghetto ganster, now i'm not implying that you do.

Just got back from Susur. That was the best meal I have ever had in Toronto. The concept to me of having a taster menu where you don't know what you're going to get is outstanding. That's the way I like to eat. It was expensive, but you know the guy spent 14 days sourcing each of the ingredients on your plate. He was very nice, greeted my party and me.
We also took advantage of the tour and enjoyed it. I'm a nerd like that, so it may not appeal to everyone.
My only negative comment would be that the bench seats are really uncomfortable.

I was at Susur a little while back with my girl, and I remember that for the both of us it was close to 300$ including drinks. The food there is good quality and tasty, but the portions are ridiculously small. After we finished eating there we had to go for a midnight snack later on in the night. The style is what is called modern trendy meaning it's not supposed to fill you up, but it's more of a "fashion" statement to go there. You do have to reserve from what I know even if it isn't packed, and there is no menu you pretty much just get whichever courses they're featuring.

are you talking about his wife? I heard that his wife was responsible for the decor. She used to be or still is a fashion designer.

Hopefully by next year i'll be at Gordon Bleu in France or on to something bigger.
I have no desire to be a Member of Kitchen Stadium or on the challengers side as Iron Chef America has lowered the standard of the original.
