View Full Version : Food Baton Rouge Dinner Specials YMMV

Just dropped by Baton Rouge on the weekend, and noticed they have dinner specials for $25. Here's what's included:

1) Your choice of main, including Ribs and Chicken platter, 10oz. steak (forget which one), and several others. These mains of course come with their own sides, as according to the regular menu section.

2) Your choice of starter, either soup, house or Caesar salad (with garlic cheese toast)

3) Chocolate mousse dessert.

The mains usually cost roughly $25 themselves, so you're basically getting a free soup or salad, and dessert for free. The soup and salads are very good imo, especially the Caesar.

Not sure if this is for a limited time only, or if it applies only on certain days/nights. I went on a Friday evening fyi.

I've been a long fan of Baton Rouge, and their meat entrees are excellent. And if you're a big eater, you'll easily fill yourself with their portion sizes.

Go drop by your local Baton Rouge, support local business, and our economy!

Baton Rouge is way overpriced for OK ribs and mediocre everything else. Tossing in soup and dessert reduces the sting a bit, but it is still a rip IMO.

I think entrees at Baton Rouge usually come with soup/salad so its really juts a free dessert but from what I recall they're usually about $30 per entree so $25 is a good deal...

Mmmm... delicious ribs! Some of the suburban franchises can be hit and miss, but the Eaton Centre location nails fall-off-the-bones suck-the-sauce ribs every time. And, although I like the chocolate moose (sorry, "mousse") I wish there was some choice of desert in this special. Still, not bad.

Baton Rouge has a more romantic atomsphere than most other chain restaurants. Must be the reddish decor. Good for dates.

$25 for a full meal is pretty nice. I want to try the new Scarborough location.

I went to baton rouge (in Toronto) about 3 weeks ago. Ribs and chicken were pretty dry........Would not go again unless it was $10 or less or I liked eating bland fiber.

Atmosphere was pretty good though.

Okay, so I decided to use 19th century technology and called up the Baton Rouge in Dowtown Ottawa. They have no such $25 deal. They do have nightly specials. For example, tonight they have the New York Strip ($31) and the full rack of ribs ($18), includes soup or salad and a coffee. Sunday is $31 Prime Rib. I didn't get the deets on all the other nights, but you get the idea!

I went to the North York location at Yonge, just north of Sheppard.

Not to my knowledge. The entrees come with premium or regular sides, like mash potatoes, fries, coleslaw, baked beans, veges.

I am not aware of entrees coming with soups or salads, and I have been eating at Baton Rouge for years.

Seems like quite a discrepancy in deals, so it seems like this might be unique to each location.

Does that mean a full rack of ribs is an option or do you have to get the half rack/chicken combo?

BTW there are other restaurants where you can get great deals these days. Search around for prix fixe menus. Sidecar has cheap ones. If you are in the east end Bistro Camino has awesome prix fixe menus which are way better than Baton Rouge.

Actually there are many options if you look past the chains.

Their food isn't overpriced imo. You get quality meats, and very generous portions for the sides, which are higher quality compared to other chain restaurants.

I've personally never had a bad eating experience here, and their meat entrees have always been exceptional, as well as their service.

In fact, they were given the Dine.TO Best Ribs in Toronto award for 2008-2009. Unless you're from one of the big BBQ cities in the U.S., it's hard to knock Baton Rouge ribs.

Yeah it's only the chicken and rib combo entree, so half rack of ribs and a bbq chicken breast.

Call up the North York Baton Rouge for more details, and which exact entree is included in this offer:

You should've told them about it. On several occasions, either me or someone at my table complained about their entree (either too dry, or not cooked right), and they replaced the meal with a new, identical one, or gave us the option to simply order something else at no charge.

Again, YMMV, but I've had nothing but exceptional food and service in all of my Toronto (North York, Eaton Center, Richmond Hill) experiences.

They've expanded, so hopefully they've maintained their standards.

I am confused. I've been to Baton Rouge twice in my life...both were on my trip from ottawa to NS. We went in montreal, and again in quebec city. The price was WAY less than 25$ for a decently portioned meal. I am thinking more on the lines of about 12-14$ per dinner.

How is it overpriced??

My wife and I went to Baton Rouge (in Kanata) last year. She didn't like her ribs and complained. They brought her a whole new rack pretty quickly; I was impressed by their responsiveness.

I've been to BR a half-dozen times in my life and I've always liked their ribs. I would recommend it to people who haven't been there before.

I've eaten at 3 different BRs in the GTA area and never once had any problem with the meal at all. In fact it is one of my favourite restaurants to go to.

The ribs are typically awesome and a huge full rack.

The wait staff and ambience are top notch as well.

Either the people that had bad experiences were expecting something that couldn't possibly be obtained, send meals back everywhere they go or just had bad luck at that time.

I have certainly had my share of bad experiences at restuarants but never at a BR.

The ribs at the downtown location were always excellent whenever I would go there (haven't been in quite a while), but I found they were not nearly as good in the suburban ones (like Mississauga). This seems to be true of most chain restaurants... don't know why, the local neighborhood big daddy's crab shack is MUCH better here than the one I went to for a birthday party in Mississauga. What's with that?

yes you're right. all the steak dinners do in fact come with soup/salad.

I believe the steak option in the dinner special was for a 10 oz. NY Strip, which is the one in their lunch menu.

This deal is good for at least the North York location, and at least on Fridays, but that's quite a specified site of parameters.

Might want to call ahead and check if your location is offering the deal:

Was there on weekend. The food was just so-so. The price for 10-oz steak was $30. For a buck more you can get the 14oz version, minus the "dessert" which by the time you will be so full and not able to have it.

And compare to Keg Mansion last night, Keg is much better (and slightly cheaper)

Baton Rouge lost all my respect as a restaurant a few years ago.

I suffer from a peanut allergy. Not life threatening, an allergy still.

They cook with Peanut oil. or at least they did a few years ago. With all of the people allergic to peanuts, I expected them to have the decency to put it maybe on their menu somewhere, it wasn't.

I guess from a legal point of view, it IS my fault for not asking the manager first, like they want you to do at every restaurant. I just didn't expect it at a big chain like baton rouge. most people with allergies don't ask, they just have the common sense to avoid things that might have the substance.

To this day, I have yet to encounter any other establishment that cooks with peanut oil.

I've been Baton Rouge quite a few times. The ribs are ok... and they load up your plate with lots of fries to make the portion size look huge. But, I find the best bang for the buck is Montana's... and I prefer their ribs too.

Actually I like the BR ribs because I prefer the fall-off-the-bone sweet ribs compared to the more "authentic" smoked ribs. Foodies may cringe at that but hey, its what I like. But the BR ribs are not really hard to make at home. I can make them just as good at home but it takes a lot of time.

Last time I went to BR my GF had a daily special (some white fish) which was very underwhelming. As I said before you'll get better deals and better food at some non-chain restaurants.

I am sorry but keg mansion has no decent food. I have tried it about 4 times at the keg mansion and few other kegs and its always been really bad for steaks. I prefer the grungy tulip for steaks over keg. Keg is overpriced for the food they serve... for a steak house i would not recommend anyone to go there.

I went to Baton Rouge in Montreal 4 years ago for lunch. The lunch special offered a side of french fries, cinnamon apples, or a spinach/cheese mix.

I chose the spinach/cheese mix and it came in a little round porcelain torte dish. It was orgasmic! I just checked their menu online and I can't find it!!! The closest thing I can see is the Louisiana Spinach Dip, but it doesn't really seem like the same thing.

Does anyone have any idea what it was? I do know that it was a regular side order on the menu at the time.

I believe its valid at all locations. I saw an ad for it the other day I believe in the Toronto Star. The deal isn't that great though the deal starts at $25 and you don't have much choice for the starter and dessert. You can either get a soup or salad and the dessert is a chocolate mousse. If you want the baby back ribs the combo is $30 whereas the ribs on its own is $23.

Yeah, I just happen to work at Baton Rouge and yeah there are different offers for this special.
I work at the Front and John location right outside the CN Tower and Skydome (Rogers Centre).
The issue with the prices are that there are actually two sets of prices that were given to the franchises even though the specials are the same. I believe downtown locations all use the $25 price point for all their specials and a lot of the GTA and suburbia locations use the $25 and $30 prices.

And a lot of you guys complain that the chicken in the combo gets kind of dry. I testify that happens because of precooking during meal rushes. But that's something at any other restaurant there is, slow cooking food items like chicken and burgers get cooked up in batches because there's only so much grill space and they "extra" so they don't get backed up.

But all in all, I think the price for the food is fair the portions for everything is pretty large compared to other chain restaurants in the same price range. But then again when it comes to quality of food and service YMMV, because it is the service industry and there will always be crappy servers where ever you eat at.

has anybody ever been to that baton rouge before?? i've been there when it was still the old scott house and i didn't really like it because it was really noisy and the waiters were all too busy having fun in the kitchen to care about their customers....
