Just ordered.
Go from the Visaperks website.
http://www.visaperks.ca/visaperks/offer.cfm?cat=all&offertype=all&merch=109138&clear=y&CFID=9601032&CFTOKEN=94140287
You will see that the upgrades are slightly cheaper when you go from the visaperks link. Then add the CAXVISA0506 code to your shopping cart at the end. My final price came out to be around $50 lower than what I would have got using the above coupon.

Well bear in mind that config has a DVD-ROM not a DVD-RW (granted it might not be important for some)
As well a 4 cell battery limits its portability.

Common sense tells you that if you suspect something is a price error in your favor - you do not let the vendor know about it.;)
Lenovo has a history of price errrors - I guarantee you that Lenovo (NOT IBM - they do not own the Thinkpad anymore) will have price errors in the future.

Likewise, it's over $1000 for me.
A question though, if the history shows that pretty much all of these price errors from Lenovo get canceled, then why do people bother to post them? It's a waste of time for everyone, not to mention disappointment. The finder also gets a better chance to have it slip by if he/she doesn't publicize it.
But I'm guessing these aren't price errors but very clever marketing by Lenovo. They put up a "price error", keep it for a few hours then take it away. This way they keep people coming to their website. Of course, then they also wait for a month to ship and at the last moment quietly cancel the order, by which time the world has moved on. It costs them nothing in the end and they gain a lot of hits.

If you called, DO NOT mention this deal!
If you mentioned, DO NOT post it here!
If you did all above, then good luck with that!
I'm just joking! Please don't feel bad about this, most of us just want to find an excuse not getting this deal, and it's better to be someone else's fault.

I think the confirmation emails most people are talking about are not the ones you get right after you order, but the ones you get later in that are written in the courier font.

Nope. That's DDR2 laptop memory; the T400s take DDR3. You're looking for something like these (http://www.canadacomputers.com/index.php?do=ShowProdList&cmd=pl&id=RAM.187.778) or http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?logon=&langid=EN&sku_id=0665000FS10118386&catid= (but the latter is rather expensive, largely because it's Future Shop and they're rarely competitive when it comes to computer components).

I can't tell. I've even scoured the Internet and cannot get a straight answer on DDR3 and dual channeling. Crucial says you don't need it, yet you can buy "dual channel" kits. If you already have 2 GB and you are going to just be doing things like surfing the net, Microsoft Office, email, watching movies, etc., then an extra GB will give you no speed advantage at all. If you work with Photoshop, CAD, large databases, etc, then you may find it helpful. Some video editing programs also like RAM (I use Vegas, and it uses comparatively little RAM).

One thing bugs me though, I've read in a T400 review (http://www.laptopmag.com/review/laptops/thinkpad-t400.aspx?page=4) that the test unit's weak link was the hard drive and it occured to be a 7200RPM Hitachi drive, maybe the same line they sell at NCIX. I erred somewhat on my order and decided to risk calling Lenovo. My order has been released to manufacturing, which means it's going through.
The bad part is that it didn't dawn on me until I was working on a Lenovo here at work that if I chose the media card option that I would lose the PC card option. And once it's in manufacturing, it's too late to change anything.
So this means you guys are all likely getting your fire-sale-priced T400s. Yay!

That's great to hear...I just hope that they get the order right. As someone mentioned before, the order confirmation doesn't list out all the options selected when you originally configured the laptop. ;)
Regarding the PC Card, I selected the same option as well but it shouldn't be too bad since it still comes with the Express Card slot which is starting to become more and more common place over the PC Card.

Yeah, I need the old style PC card. Some guy on eBay is selling PCcard/Expresscard thingies for $20, so I'll probably go there and get it. I found the T400 service manual online. It doesn't look too difficult to replace the Excpresscard/Smartcard combo

Talked to a rep this afternoon. For those that ordered a T400 with the discrete ATI card like I did, there is a chance your laptop will ship tomorrow, but more likely it will be shipping around the 29th or beginning of June.
There will NOT be any email to inform/update you of the shipping date. The next email you get will be informing you that your laptop has ALREADY shipped, nothing before that.

Yes!:cheesygri mines already arrived in Canada so should be getting it very soon.
Question, is this capable of switchable graphics? Discreet to onboard? Its been so long, I forgotten what kind of specs this has.
Also does anyone know if there is still an issue with keyboard flex?

I think it depends on whether you selected the model with discrete graphics - from what I've read so far, the models with discrete graphics can switch to onboard.

I had to call in and tell the UPS rep that the driver doesn't have to be afraid and can come right up to my floor and ask reception for me...sheesh...even gave my cell phone in case he gets lost trying to take the elevator up to the 6th floor. Now I have to wait another day for my laptop.

Received the T400 today. According to the shipping status online, it was shipped on June 5. Also, received email notification about shipping this morning. Very impressed by shipping time AFTER manufacturing was completed.
First thing I noticed was the keyboard flex towards the left side which has been one of the major complaints about the T400 for many users. I will probably call for a T61 keyboard replacement later this week since people have claim that it helps.

I looked into the flex problem a little more and these are the specific part numbers you want : 42T3109 or 42T3209. These are the T61 models with few holes on the backside.
If you don't specify they will just send you an exact same replacement keyboard as the problematic one. I don't know if they will automatically send you one though?
On ebay it costs around $60.

UPS usually delivers from 8am to 8pm so there's still a chance you may get it.

Received about 30 minutes ago.
First impressions...cheaper plastic than my T61 or X series from work. I have an old T21 lying around - the build quality was top notch back then.
Both the integrated and discrete graphics seem to run my 1080P MKV files well enough. I have not tried my blu-rays streaming off my server. Given I game on a console and have two HTPCs - not sure the discrete is even necessary.
Screen is okay - was worried that the 1280 by 800 was too low. It is fine. Video looks okay.
There is a little keyboard flex - but it doesn't really bother me. Just not as good keyboards as the prior versions. Man, the T21 keyboard is amazing.
I wasn't sure if I would keep this machine. A 14 inch notebook is a bit big. Was really looking for 12 inch screen that can do 1080P. But - given the price, I cannot complain.

Jun 9th, 2009, 07:11 PM
lol, looks like a bunch of us got ours at the same time.
I agree the plastic does feel cheap. Removing the palm rest when installing my ram I could really tell. I can't notice any flex in the keyboard. This is my first thinkpad so can't really compare it to other models. I can live with it.
Going from a Dell Inspiron to a thinkpad is a big jump and so far its more then I expected. That trackpoint is great
I have a silly question. Does the 6 cell battery stick out at the back or is it flush? For some reason I thought only the 9 cell sticks out.

Just unpacked mine and so far so good. Here are my impressions when compared with my T61:
-Plastic does feel different than the T61. It has more of a matted feel which sort of makes it seem cheaper as others have mentioned. However, I tried pressing down on the plastic to the left and right of the trackpad and it feels just as solid as my T61
-Keyboard is a little more flexy than my T61 but I don't think the difference is as bad as many users have mentioned on the net. However, like Web0112 mentioned, it's definitely not as good as the older T series models. One thing I'll say is that the keyboard does seem to be quieter than my T61.
-Although my T61 has a 1680x1050 resolution, this LED screen does seem to be more crisper and not as washed out. I too was worried about going to a lower resolution but it seems to suit this screen just fine - but still wish the WXGA+ was available when I ordered this. ;)
-I had read several reports about the keyboard light wasn't that good on the T400 but after trying it out on my T400 it seems to work fine and does the job fine
Now, I just need to decide which hard drive I will be upgrading to (a WD 500 GB 5400 rpm or the WD 320 GB 7200 rpm drive). :cheesygri

To change from discrete to integrate, put your mouse over the power indicator, right click - on the menu you will see switchable graphics. Select the one you want.
It does suck that there is no HDMI. Need to get the dock to get optical out and DVI. Down the road if I decide to hook this up to a tv, I'll pick up the dock. I adready have two dedicated HTPCs/media centers.
Battery life is real good. With my 6 cell, I'm hitting 5 hours. That includes about 2 hours HD video from a server (via wireless N). Smokin!
Will likely put Vista Ultimate on it - so I can have media center. I have a number of retail boxes hanging around.

Yeah, I was thinking of picking one of those up as I already have one in my T61 however, after reading the following review, I'm more inclined to go with the WD Scorpio Black 320 GB:
http://techreport.com/articles.x/15079/15
But, some threads I've been gone through on a few forums also say that the 500 GB 5400 rpm drives from Hitachi (the 5k500.b) and the WD Scorpio Blue 500 GB are pretty decent as well and in some cases are even faster than some 7200 rpm drives - plus they are very power efficient which is great for battery life.
One last variable to throw into the mix is that when I went to Infonec today to pick up some RAM, the rep who was helping me mentioned that the 500 GB drives may be dropping in price by the end of the month...so decisions, decisions. ;)

Could be due to the motion sensor in the HD that detects shock.

And I have been uninstalling crap for an hour!
The trackpoint is like coming home. I hate touchpads and have missed the trackpoint ever since my Pentium 3 Inspiron laptop many years ago.
I have the SSD-- no noise, which is great because I want to use this in my home studio. Vista was not optimized for the SSD--I had to shut off Superfetch and change a few registry settings.
Was hoping to put Windows 7 on it, but now I can see I would lose a lot of functionality... :( -Like switchable graphics (which took me a bit to figure out)
Battery life is nothing short of stellar, with over 6 hours on 80% brightness with a 6-cell. Kicks my Acer's puny 1:30 right out the window.
So it took very little time after shipping notification to get this. Thank goodness, I can take it on my business trip :)

There is something strange on the warranty. I checked on the Lenovo site for warranty right away. It shows it expires on 09/01/2010. Lenovo is giving us free 3 more months of warranty? How about yours?
The WXGA 1280X800 LED screen does not look as good as I expected. In comparison to the WXGA LED screen on a Dell XPS M1330 with a Toshiba screen LCD2306 side by side, the color on Dell seems more vivid/colorful. In device manager on T400, it shows LEN4035. I googled it but could not find who is the manufacturer of this screen.

Thinkvantage power management is a must
without it vista seems to want to give me battery time of 3.5 hours with a 9-cell battery. With the software it's giving me almost 7 hours!!! that's a HUGE difference. I installed windows 7 but the battery management software doesn't seem to wanna install.
Gonna try a hackintosh install tomorrow if i have time.
For the person thinking the screen doesn't look so good i think they're right but the screen is VERY bright. Screens with a high NIT output don't look at nice as those with a lower NIT but you'll love it in direct sunlight.

For those who hate the demo/bloat ware that comes pre-loaded, I thought I'd share some clean install guides that should come in handy that I found on the net:

Stallen's Vista Clean Install Guide:

Orev’s Clean Install Guide:

Personally, I used the T400 Mini Guide steps (except I did not delete the hidden partitions or install the Ultranav driver since the touchpad seems to work perfectly fine) with my Vista Ultimate SP2 ISO and that seemed to work fine. However, I also found that you also need to install the following:
-Intel AMT 4.0 (for the unknown PCI Simple Communications Controller)
-Intel Local Manageability Service (for the unknown PCI Serial device in Device Manager)
You can get both drivers from the Lenovo support site.
As well, the only ThinkVantage apps I have installed are the following:
-ThinkVantage Power Manager
-ThinkVantage Active Protection System
Still debating on whether I should install the Presentation Director (it came in handy a few times on my T61) and the Ultranav utility. Lastly, I may need to install either the ThinkVantage Rescue and Recovery if the blue ThinkVantage button has stopped working during POST:
http://forums.lenovo.com/lnv/board/message?board.id=Special_Interest_Utilities&message.id=5629
I believe reinstalling the ThinkVantage Productivity Center app will also help you get the blue ThinkVantage button to function again according to other forum posts and stallen's clean install guide.
Hope this helps!

I did a clean install of Vista Ultimate SP2 a few days ago. I used the first two guides above. Careful that you backup the factory install and remove the extra partitions before you do the clean install. Follow the guides. There is one partition that is protected - I didn't remove prior to the install - it was a pain to get rid of after.
As well - you don't really need the power management software - but you do need the power management driver. I installed the software simply because it is easy access to the switchable graphics. But is kind of bloaty.
Very disappointed that Lenovo doesn't have switchable graphics ready with Windows 7. If they did, I would went to 7 right away.
Anyway, Vista has been running perfectly on all my machines for over a year and a half. So no biggy.
