Here's some good news. Lenovo has once again put out an aggressive promotion on the SL400 and SL500 ThinkPads (http://www.dpbolvw.net/click-749547-10559892?url=http%3A%2F%2Fshop.lenovo.com%2Fca%2Fn otebooks%2Fthinkpad%2Fsl-series). Use coupon code CAP15OFFSL500 or CAP15OFFSL400 (as appropriate) at the checkout for savings of 15%. Each code is good for 250 uses or until the end of May 17, whichever comes first.

The SL400 offer looks pretty much the same as the one provided to RedFlagDeals.com a few weeks ago. That means you can pick up systems like the following:

ThinkPad SL400 with T6570 processor and integrated graphics --$572.90 after the coupon is applied

Intel Core 2 Duo processor T6570 (2.1GHz 800MHz 2MBL2) (manually selected)
Genuine Windows Vista Home Basic
14.1" WXGA LED VibrantView
Intel GMA X4500
2 GB PC2-5300 DDR2 (2 DIMM)
US English Keyboard
160GB Hard Disk Drive, 5400rpm
DVD Recordable, Fixed
ThinkPad 11b/g III Wi-Fi wireless LAN Mini-PCIe
Modem: Yes - AMoM
6 cell Li-Ion Battery (2.4Ah)
1 Year Depot/Express Warranty

Or, upgrade to a Core 2 Duo P8600 processor and discrete video card solution in the NVIDIA GeForce G105M 256MB for a final price of $742.90.

On the SL500 front, all of the basic configurations now come standard with an LED display -- an enhancement over the last offer. So now, we're looking at deals like the following:

ThinkPad SL500 with T6570 processor and LED Display -- $530.40 after the coupon is applied

Intel Core 2 Duo processor T6570 (2.1GHz 800MHz 2MBL2) (manually selected)
Genuine Windows Vista Home Basic
15.4" WXGA LED AntiGlare
Intel GMA X4500

160GB Hard Disk Drive, 5400rpm
DVD Recordable
ThinkPad 11b/g III Wi-Fi wireless LAN Mini-PCIe
6 cell Li-Ion Battery (2.4Ah)

Think about it this way, in 10 years all the non-lenovo laptops will look like crap (maybe not the XPS or the Unibody Macbook) and you can carry your "new" lenovo laptop around. :cheesygri

Anyone know what this is about?

On the SL400 I get:
WLAN a/b/g/n antenna, and a choice between: ThinkPad 11b/g III Wi-Fi wireless LAN Mini-PCIe and Intel WiFi Link 5100.

Are they both wireless? :S

Wireless N requires 3 Antenna. Wireless G requires only 2.

That box just says 3 Antenna are built in.

If you select Wireless G card, only 2 of them are connected.

But if you select the Intel 5100, all 3 are connected.

Actually, 3 antennas are not required for WiFi 802.11n, 2 will work fine. Intel 5100 only uses 2 antennas for 2.4Ghz/5Ghz traffic since it only has 2 connectors. Intel 5300 has 3 connectors, hence 3 antennas, and can achieve better throughput. http://www.intel.com/network/connectivity/products/wireless/adapters/5000/

Intel 5300 is available on the T series, IIRC. Sight unseen, I'd guess that the SL model only has 2 antennas built into the screen while the T model has 3. Should you add a 3-connector WiFi card and wish to achieve full throughput you can probably still install an extra antenna all coiled-up in the laptop's cavities.

I did after a long chat with Dell as I was trying to get them to come up with a comparable system at the same price. I thought they could do it as I've bought 8 PC in the last two years from Dell. But they could not match the configuration at the same price.

The last time I had an Thinkpad was back in 2002.

Hi, I forgot to upgrade my SL500 with the 5100 intel Draft-N option.

Now i try to find a 5100 card to upgrade my standard wifi card. There is no thinkpad compatible 5100 card on ebay but some of 5300 are OK for Thinkpad.

Are you sure the 3 antenna are there in my brand new SL500 with only 2 connectors plugged? If yes i'll simply order a 5300 card.

Thanks!

You'll be fine with the basic one. I have an intel one on my t400 never lost a signal, and is able to detect relatively weak signals as well.

Although I think the basic wifi card is b/g. Having a card with N may be beneficial if you intend on keeping your notebook for a few years. I figure N will become the new standard eventually. Then again most signals are mixed a/b/g/n. N is faster so it really depends on what you want/need. I think for the extra ~$30 get the intel card.

For those thinking of Windows 7, and the XP virtualization mode for running non-windows7 compatible programs - this article seems to indicate that the T6570 is not a processor supporting the VT mode required.

http://blogs.zdnet.com/Bott/?p=946&page=3

So for future use with Windows 7, it may pay to go up to a P8400 which does support this virtualization mode.

Depends on whether you got the 6-cell or 9-cell.

Apparently the maximum runtime (SL500) with the 6-cell is 3 hours and 53 minutes at idle with no WLAN and minimum screen brightness, and 1 hour and 13 minutes minutes under max load:
http://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-Lenovo-Thinkpad-SL500-Notebook.11741.0.html
Average use would probably be somewhere between.

With the 9-cell, under average use, these guys got 5 hours and 14 minutes:
http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=4592

I went with the 9-cell personally.

I received mine about 8 business days after ordering.

This is my first lap top ever. The HDMI is really handy, I plug it into my 46 inch samsung to watch hi def MKV files all the time. I managed to configure my media player to offload the decoding to the video card so it's using a lot less CPU power. (roughly 15% reduced to 5%)

When my buddy saw it, he thought I got it from 1994! LOL! There's definitely nothing fancy about it's design but I like the no-nonsense style. It's very thick though. 1.5 inch.

I got mine with the Nvidia Card, I don't really think I need it because I don't play games and i suspect the integrated 4500 can easily handle HD MKV files. Plus I can't even get CUDA to work via Core AVC. This card is capable of switching between integrated video and discrete video but Lenovo didn't include the software to use it. In other words, it is under utilized so I kind of regret paying extra for the card.

Overall, I'm happy with it. My first lap top, nothing to compare it to but the keyboard feels great. I love typing on it more than a regular keyboard!

Received my SL400 but also a possible defect AC adapter. Lenovo is sending a replacement AC for free.

I am hoping it's just the AC defect since laptop does not show AC is plugged in when it is.

...Annoyed.

wow that's definitely weird, I got the confirmation as soon as I ordered online (May 15th) and it shipped on the 20th, btw what did you order the SL400 or 500, it may also depend on your customization, the only thing I customized was the core 2 duo (T6570) and a 250 GB hard drive. What did you customize?

from what I understood when I called Lenovo was that there is hardly any contact or relation between their website and the actual shipment. The only way to find the status of the shipment is by calling. My online status says "submitted", however my SL400 is 35000 Feet over the Pacific Ocean on its way to Canada from Mainland China. :D

and I still don't have a tracking number, you only get the tracking once it lands in North America

madcow043

Status is "In Process" estimated ship date is 05/21/2009 so I'm assuming it shipped already and is in north america

I don't know why everyone says Thinkpads are ugly?? They are very beautiful in my opinion, their beauty comes from their plain-ness and no-nonsense design. This laptop will accompany me throughout my post-secondary education!!:cheesygri I was thinking of downgrading to XP pro, does any1 have suggestions?

They said guarantee before end of the month so I better get a email tmmr...

If I don't get a shipping by tmmr then I have no choice but to cancel after 7 weeks of waiting unless they can offer me a good incentive...

Ugh, how stupid. It got shipped HK to Vancouver to Toronto. Now they have to ship it back across the country to Vancouver. I could've just picked it up at the airport yesterday. Instead I probably won't get it until next week.
