Review
Sushi City
Corner of Highway 27 & Langstaff Rd,
Woodbridge, ON
905-850-8378

*UPDATED as of Oct 2009* Price: - $9.99 lunch (minus 15%), $14.99 dinner (minus 15%) - 15% off on ALL takeout orders (platters included)
Quality - 3.5/5
Taste - 3/5
Overall Impression - 3/5

I'm a huge fan of sushi (about the time it became the "it" food). So I write this as someone who appreciates decent food, at fair prices served relatively well. This place is a nice alternative for people in Vaughan/Woodbridge who are sick of Akita (Hwy 7 & Martin Grove Rd) for whatever reason and want to try something new. This place is currently offering 10% off on take-out, dine-in and everything else. It's a sushi place yes, it's AYCE, but it's not bad and is a good alternative.

Atmosphere

A large venue, that can currently accommodate 160 people or so dining in, with a private second floor dining room that will be able to accommodate up to 275. It's a large venue, with a fairly large kitchen and this place can definitely be a place where people can go.

Food and Menu

The menu is quite extensive, but nothing out of the ordinary. The usual, a large selection of special maki rolls, sashimi available at dinner only, some fried food and noodles, as well as a selection of sushi pizza and what not.

The pics of the menu below are the AYCE menu, but their take-out menu is quite extensive in what they offer, over 100 items on there, but quite expensive compared to places I've been before.

Their salmon, tuna, and eel are quite good, and they use relatively little rice compared to other places (a good thing), but they do not currently offer brown rice. Check it out, it's worth one visit. I recommend it, and it beats driving down the 407 from Vaughan/Brampton to Richmond Hill/Markham.

The menu is put together from google images, etc., but lol. Enjoy. Btw hefty penalty for ordering more than you can chew...$1 for sushi, $2 per everything else.

Not really. How often do people post the menu and prices in their threads? And the way the food looks won't be exact every time, besides it could taste great or terrible. Im glad he posted the menu.

And yeah, i am sick of Akita. Mainly because of the slow service. How was the service at this place?

Thanks for the post, I hope this place does well, the last 2 restaurants failed miserably, and the Coffee Time that's in the same unit I have no idea how they survive, with that being said, perhaps with the added traffic that the new Walmart, and soon the LCBO will bring maybe a blessing. It's about time we had some decent AYCE Sushi joints in Woodbridge, the one in the Martin Grove/Hwy 7 was a joke, and Koganei as good as they are, can get pricey.

Good to hear,

Just to communicate my experience with service. Service was great, they went the extra mile to ensure that I had a good time (probably because they're only 1 week old)

They also brought me "chef's special" rolls on the house and they were quite good.

Also to be clear, service shouldbe compared among other sushi restaurants, and not fine dining experiences. Remember, these places have different traditions and styles. Compared to AKita though, I think the service is better, faster, and a tad friendlier.

OH FYI they have a Fruit, Salad and desert bar in addition to ice cream and other things made to order. However the deserts are displayed (they are included) on the main menu.

Went there again, not bad. The variety is good, space is comforting and when it's full (as opposed to when I went) it's a great atmosphere to be in. THe salad bar jello imho, is horrible though.

We went there over the long weekend (Saturday). The food was good, and the presentation was excellent. There was a large variety on the menu and it was fresher than other ayce places. Our large sashimi order came on a boat :cheesygri There was the "salad bar" which was pretty crappy. That day when we went, there was ayce cold crab legs (uncracked) at the salad bar which also contained lettuce (no other toppings at all), some can fruits (melons, peach), and out of the box desserts (i.e. cream puffs, coffee cake, etc).

In terms of service, we found it to be quite lacking like other ayce sushi places. The place wasnt at all busy and they had quite a large number of serving staff. Some of our orders were missing, and it took them a long time for them to come around to take orders. The only great thing about the service is that they did not enforce the 2 hour limit like other places.

If I were to rate it comparing to other AYCE Sushi places (like Yang's or Maison).

Food 5/5 - very fresh
Variety(menu) 4/5
Service 3/5 - Slow
Price 3/5 ($17.99 for dinner, add $2 for weekends/holidays and $1.50 for soft drinks. They had a 10% grand opening discount but they charged us Gratuity for group of 4).
Overall 4/5

Thanks for the review, been meaning to try this place ever since I've seen it opened up. I'm one of those people who have grown tired of Akita haha

Haha, same here. AKita looks so enticing, but it is quite expensive (relative to this place at least). One thing I like about this place is that they're going to get better at what they do and hopefully the quality will go up.

Just compared to Akita, I think the variety of the roll combinations are a little bit better and the rest is roughly the same. So economically, you get the same food, for less! (Hallelujah?)

BTW, that 10% "service charge" is their built in TIP, so follow Japanese tradition and don't leave a tip! :D

The problem with their damn service charge is that they tack it on after tax, which means you pay more than 10%.

Tried it last night before slipping down to Colossus to watch ST on the IMAX screen.

Sorry, but gotta go against the flow here. The food we got at this place was hardly even average. A meal should be interesting and enjoyable based on the flavours, smells, and textures that come to the table. This place is a bust. The food was insipid and mushy, the flavours off. When I'm sitting at the table trying to decide to force something down or take the hit on the leftover fee, then I know that I'm not having a good time of it. There wasn't one thing come to the table that was in any way exciting or that I'd want to do again.

Food below average, and over-priced. The space is pleasant enough (but huge) and I think they're gonna have a hard time filling the room and making a go of it. Service was good, but it would want to be when there's hardly anybody underfoot.

Doesn't matter if you can cram down as much as you like - its just not worth the cramming.

Fail. Go somewhere else.

ST's still in Imax at Collosus? Ah man, I wish Terminator was in IMAX. I'll add to this by saying that when I went on a WEEKDAY for dinner two days ago, it wasn't that great actually.

I think they save their best stuff for the weekend.

IMAX Tue-Thu only, limited run. Not shot in IMAX, but still kind of fun for the big ass screen and the sound system. Great battle scenes.

So, yeah our sushi was weekday stuff. Unimpressive unfortunately.

Its about the same drive to Bolton from Castlemore and there is an AYCE in the Bolton Mews at 50 (Queen) and King (southeast corner). Try that and tell us how it is :) cos Sushi City is a bust.

Its called Sushi Date and is in the Courtyards of Caledon in Bolton, 18 King St. (right downtown, southeast corner of 50 and King St.). There is also a Thai place in there, not AYCE.

SD has been there about a year maybe? Never had the chance to go yet.

Be ruthless. :)

Love To Eat
Jun 1st, 2009, 09:21 AM
Went to Sushi City last Friday for dinner with husband.
Oh man, all you can eat, plus 10% off. What a great deal! Food, service and selection was awesome!
Love the Salmon & Tuna sashimi, thicker than usual and juicy slices. Even if you don't eat the raw stuff, there is so many other things to eat. Try the noodles, fried rice, ribs, grilled salmon/fish, pork cutlet, chicken, vegetable tempura.. oh man, we were on top of the world!
The shrimp tempura was huge and juicy.
You have to try the Japanese wonton, yummy.. seaweed wrap diced shrimp!
The Red Dragon roll was mouth watering.
The soft crab rolls were to die for.
They did not scimp on the avocado or the fillings. We really hate it when other Japanese restaurants put a big glob of rice and tiny filling inside my rolls!
The flavours, fillings and texture were so very well balanced !
They have all a salad/dessert bar, which you serve yourself. All you can eat Crab Legs and Shrimp and Dessert (fruit).
We would recommend this place and keep going to this one from now on. Great value for Japanese food! A whole gang of us from the office is going this Thursday for lunch! Can't wait.

Not bloody likely. Your descriptions are a more than a bit over the top and not even close to the reality of the place. Get real. Learn to eat.

I went on Canada Day to try it out for $6.99. There was a long lineup so they left cases of bottled water and pop outside for the customers waiting in line. once we sat down, the waitress kept giving us appetizers that we didn't even order. Anyways, I've had better sushi. The salmon sashmini was good but i didnt like the rice on the sushi.

The food was cold too.

good thing I only paid $6.99+tax.

and its in that NO FRILLS complex. on LANGSTAFFFFFFFFF

you guys should try AKITA SUSHI at HWY 7 between Kipling & martin Grove! in the same plaza as the tim hortons adn shoppers drug mart!

Akita and Sushi City are both just average.

I try not to bother with either place and just head downtown to Sushi Island. The selection of rolls far surpasses either of the above.

Anyone try Makimono, another AYCE sushi place in Vaughan?
