Happens in 99% of Japanese Restaurants in GTA, indifferent to AYCE or not
Don't know how long I have been saying this... just happened that media decided to uncover this

Tai - is not really red snapper, its tilapia
White Tuna - is not white tuna either, its oilfish/butterfish

And if u're a purist- we're even getting cheated out for our Tuna which is supposedly "Bluefin" in Japan, and here we're eating yellow-fin/ahi-tuna.

Thats why I stick with good sushi restaurants and not cheap AYCE/ sushi-on-bloor type places. Zen, Sushi Marche, I love you guys

Oh and note, Tilapia is freshwater fish

A reason why Japanese generally don't use freshwater fish is because of parasites that live in freshwater.

And for those who might say "you don't care" (like my friend beside me)
Well.. imagine if you were to just find out the 100% beef at McD's isn't really beef....

In terms of the red snapper/tilapia, I hate that stuff anyways and never order it.

In terms of the white tuna/butter fish, I knew that already.

So what places can you recommend that actually serve what they describe?

According the the article sushi marche does not serve red snapper from Japan either.

How can you say the complain is weak, just because you don't eat red snapper doesn't mean others don't as well. If they are serving it they should call it tilapia and not red snapper from Japan.

It's like buying a fake rolex from a store that advertises it as a real rolex. In the case of the rolex if the price is too good to be true most people will know it is fake, but this is not the case with fish.

It's great thestar is doing more of this type of investigative journalism even if the states were first to publish a similar article.

Tilapia is a North American farmed fish. It is an African fish which grows fast so it is perfect for farming.

The real Red Snapper is fish from the Gulf of Mexico although there are many species of red coloured fish that are called red snapper. You could be eating any species that is red coming from Japan if that is the way you think. You are absolutely right about the Rolex analogy and I think you should check your fish.
It's great TheStar is doing a cut and paste of an old newspaper story just to fill space. Don't give TheStar credit where it is not due. These types of stories are in a file and used to take up space on a slow news day.
Because everyone is being told to eat fish (raw or cooked), it is good for you, the marketers are out in full force. Fact is, you just don't know what you are eating these days and sometimes you are eating junk fish with a pretty name attached and believe it is a real species. Like anything else, consumer beware.

FYI: if you click on the "map" to the right, it tells you which resturant and what they tried to to fake with.

Thanks for posting. That was very informative. I've always thought Sushi restaurants in the GTA to be sketchy. I never knew why some places were so cheap compared to others.

In the article they mentioned that they would tell it is not real red snapper IF the customer asks. Who the hell really asks if it’s real? If you order something by the name of RED SNAPPER you expect to get that!

Actually its listed as sea bream on the menu, called Madai, and every time I"ve ordered it has been called sea bream. They only called it "japanese snapper" on the phone or in person to the reporter, which sounds a bit strange. I would guess that it was a response to a question like "what is that fish like?" or something. I've ordered madai many times from Sushi Marche and it is labelled and explained as exactly that, sea bream. Anyways..I believe madai to be a higher quality fish than snapper as well.
