Is it necessary to have a police (or two) present at a (Chinese) wedding banquet?

Of course you do, get them to try out the tasers on the guests.

It is not necessary. But if you feel uneasy about it and find that having a couple of police officers present provides a peace of mind, why not?

I don't get it. Is it because some Asians can't hold their liquor?
How much do these police officers get paid?

I want to know too how much they get paid too... :)
It seems to be somewhat normal to have police officers present in a Chinese wedding...I guess it is because people are afraid of robbery during or after the wedding. It is a tradition for Chinese newly wed couples to recieve cash as wedding gifts during the baquet. These red pockets are all stored inside a single money box (I think this is a bad idea). Easy target for a "grab and dash" I would say...
Think about it. If each guest contribute $50, you will have a gift box worth $10000 with only 200 guests...

This way it is not as traditional...Some of my friends who are younger gave me checks but most people of an older generation still contribute cash...

In Toronto, a constable gets $65.00 / hour for pay-duty, minimum 3 hours.

It really depend on your comfort level. We hired them for our banquet because my parents and in-laws were a little worried about all the jewelry people would be wearing, and because of the tradition of people giving cash. Apparently you can't just hire one, they work in partners. Came out to $575 for the two (I don't remember how many hours...4?). As a courtesy, we fed them too, but not the traditional chinese banquet stuff...we left it up to the restaurant to order them some regular stuff (fried rice/noodles etc).

Cash is King in Chinese culture, not checks:o
and most Chinese weddings are on the large side, say around 500guests, that's like 250 checks (assuming couples). no fun cashing that many checks. Also, the money is used the same nite for the bill a lot of times

well-- a few chinese restaurants have been the target of robbers in the past, so its just pre-cautionary.
There is a lot of money going around, and gold+jewlery...
You want your friends and family to be safe too right.
Its like insurance, seems like extra, but if it does happen to u, you would wish you had the cops there.

you went to the ghetto weddings then:lol:
and what does a better place have anything to do with it? do better neighborhoods and nicer cars don't get stolen? nicer places don't get robbed?
unless by better place you mean a police station, but they don't do weddings.

OF COURSE NOT. It's like saying that every Chinese knows kung fu.

Quite a few weddings that I've been to were held at rather high end venues. On the other hand, I have been to a wedding (held at own premises) where security guards were hired. But to say that it's common for Chinese weddings to have cops is simply ridiculous.

the op said no cops at italian weddings, i said for chinese weddings there are cops, not that there will always be cops at every single one.
of the 200+ or so chinese weddings i've been at, more than half have had cops. (I used to work at a mid-high end chinese restaurant/banquet hall when in school)
but maybe you've been to more.

At many family weddings that I have been at, you'd better add a zero on the end of the amount that was stated as per person for the Chinese wedding, and still no police...

i don't get it. what is it that makes you feel the need for police officers at a wedding?
did you mean security? (big difference). Either way, why would you flee the need for any of those?

If you really are concerned about the money box, then ask the venue if they have security guards they normally hire for events and request to hire 2 or 3 of them for the night. It'll be the equivalent of hiring 1 cop in terms of cost and they won't stick out like a sore thumb either (they should of course be wearing suits or at the very least dress shirts and pants). I work at a company that always has at least 1 security/doorman present at all events.
Security at weddings is fairly common at some venues. It's more for the venue's sake than the guests though. They make sure that people who arrive are here for the wedding and not some sort of drifter, and they ensure no one gets too drunk/rowdy. You'll also see them doing other tasks as well such as opening doors, answering the guests questions, making sure children aren't wondering too far alone from their parents ect...

Having worked in Chinese restaurants and served hundreds of wedding, I have only noticed a few times where there was private security by the wedding party.
Mind you, it's a good idea for the security because there is always so much GOLD around.
In addition, there have been robberies of at Chinese weddings.

FYI, there have been robberies at Chinese weddings.. Hiring a cop, well, they come in 2's b/c there's alcohol at weddings, and there's a minimum time, like 2 or 4 hrs, can't remember. If there's gonna be lots of cash, jewelry, and if the wedding is in Scarborough, I would say one should seriously consider hiring cops. Hotels/nice venues etc likely won't need a police presence. It;s more a piece of mind, and remember, do whatever it takes so you can enjoy your wedding!:)

Hmm
I've been to several weddings ranging from a low of 200 people to a high of 1000 people. Lot of cash money, gold/diamonds, booze, etc in the venues.
I have yet to see a police officer or security guard present. However, ofcourse, the Bride or Groom had "backup" in the venue in case things did get out of control.

$65/hr...
you need 2+ if the venue is serving alcohol.
We had them for my brothers wedding.
Bill came up to just over $500... It's pretty much 'insurance' considering all the money that's going around.
It isn't that much money considering we were insuring nearly $40k.
