What's the best Fish and Chips place in Toronto?
I've heard of Harbord Fish and Chips, Somethin's Fishy in Kensington and I have been wanting to try the fish and trips at Crown and Dragon Pub

This is our standard...
In a recent North Toronto Post, it was awarded top place by Rodney (of oyster fame).

I've read a lot about this place on chowhound. Many like it a lot, some don't like it. I live nearby and have driven past this place almost daily for 3 years. I LOVE fish and chips but for some reason have never actually made it in this place! If it weren't on my route I would probably have made a case to go there, but I find I never end up going to places I pass everyday.

Know this place pretty well. My parents took me as a kid when it was called something else. Not a huge fan of it now as it's a little overpriced and the food isn't that good.
I like the place up by Yonge and Elgin Mills. The one I'd prefer to go to though is the Olde Yorke. Really good fish and chips.

It's just a tiny little shop, owned by the same husband and wife for as long as I can remember. It's at Main & Nanwood, across from the Beer Store... they've got pretty good shrimp's too, from what I remember
It's nothing extraordinary but they know their fish, and do it well... I suggest eating in so you can take advantage of the crispy beer-batter without it getting soggy

I think you're referring to Heritage Fish & Chips. Amazing and everyone at work loves it. That location is one of their smaller ones. Their main location is at 410/Queen in the No Frills plaza. Lunch takeout from 12-3 is only $6 and you get a HUGE serving.

McNie's Fish and Chips
315 Burnhamthorpe Road (At Martin Grove) - just east of the 427
416 231 6916
Old fashioned BRITISH fish and chips, freshly battered THEN fried to order. (battered right in front of you and fried in fresh oil each day).
Recently purchased by a new owner, but still serving great fish. Great value lunch special at $5 for large piece + fries.
They offer cod, haddock, etc. but go with the Halibut if you're a true F&C lover.

Christ, this place gets so much business during Lent and on Mother's Day and other occasions that the lot is full up. My friend used to own a shop right next door, and we would see people lined up outside the window for this place.
Its pretty good Fish and Chips, and i agree, the new management has kept things consistent.
Another place i used to go to as a kid, was

New Galley Fish and Chips at Yonge/Elgin Mills is pretty good.
New Galley is the best bar none! It was formally called old galley then they closed down and move to this new location. When they closed for those few months we tried literally every fish and chips place people were recommending... Chippies, reliable, mr fish and chips by unionville, high street by dvp and Lawrence, harbord, Allen court fish and chips, bob's fish and chips, kings table @ queen st E. ( which was actually pretty good), harbour fish and chips @ peanut plaza. All were either over priced, had frozen fish or had small portions. After finding out old galley had reopened with the same owners and staff my gf and I finally stopped our hunt for the best fish and chips. Fair prices, fresh fish not frozen (if fish is frozen it's tough, chewy and dry), and good portions ( the fish is small but thick tho they make it up with large portions of fries) the best IMO.

Ok I am at Danny's FC right now and I am not impressed. The fish is not fresh I can tell cus the fish is fillet is flat and compressed ie the meat is not fluffy. The batter is too thick and it feels like you are eating bread. The fries are thick... Which I usually like but their fries tasted like I was biting into a potato cus it wasn't crispy... Strange cus the fries were over cooked. They do however have fast and attentive servers.
If you're the area I would pass on danny's and go to Mr fish and chips on hwy 7 near unionville instead. They use the same type of fish but have better fries and batter.

This is incorrect. They do not use frozen fish. The waitress has told us their halibut arrives fresh daily whole, and is cut on site. You can definitely tell when eating their fish that it is fresh, as it is moist and flakes easily when you touch it with your fork. Most places have fish that is dry and has the consistency of cotton. I've been to many many places for fish and chips (including F&C shops in London, UK), and Old Galley (now New Galley) beats them all on taste and price.

Oddly enough one of the best places that I've had fish 'n chips was in Ireland too.
However the place that I liked the most was in the town of Bushmill. There were two shops almost next door to one another, and one was packed with people and the other was empty. Clearly I went into the packed place for some takeaway, and I was not disappointed at all.
Of course I had just finished doing the Bushmills tour, so perhaps that had something to do with it???
Anyway...........
As for Toronto (or the GTA) I would say St. Andrews fish 'n chip on Ellesmere Road and McCowan.
They even sell deep fried Mars bars there........seriously, you just can't make that sort of thing up!
Good question OP.

Jasper's in Whitby is really good.
I swallowed all the hype about Jasper's in Pickering, and went on a Friday afternoon, put up with a line up (but they had lots of staff so the line moved quickly), and got fish and chips to go. Chips were OK, much like many F&C shops. The halibut came in four chunks, overcooked because the size of each was so small. I was stuck with it, but would have sent it back if I was at a table.
I haven't been back, and have found Malt 'n Salt, at Whites and Oklahoma to be a lot better, no line ups, great personal service and quality F&C.

I've been a fan of Malt 'N Salt (on Lawson Rd) for a few years. I had the haddock special on Monday and the portion was super thin, and created a hollow in the batter once cooked. I have never had a bad portion of fish from them until this week.... I happens I guess. I am still not impressed with their fries, but, the batter is awesome.

My last haddock at Whites/Oklahoma was too thin as well. That was a week ago Friday, so maybe the batch was the same.
Nest time I'll ask for a thick slice, cooked moist. I'm still confident in them.

:o Ooooooooops my bad!!
I just got so carried away with the great fish'n chips story that I just figured that they were talking about Ireland based on the town name, and not Georgian Bay. ROFLAMO......
Of course if I had of thought about it for a minute I would have realized that a name like Bazooka Joe's wouldn't likely be a name for a place in Ireland......Molotov Cocktail Patty's perhaps?? Hahahahahhaha.......okay that was bad. I will apologize in advance for any offense caused, it just struck me as funny at the time.
I still stand by my thoughts of the great food I had in the town of Bushmill though! I'd go back to Ireland in a mintue!
Thanks for the correction.
