Since we moved into this house the doorbell never worked. I tried opening the receiver but it’s tightly closed and don’t even think you can open it. Despite the fact I absolutely hate the way a 2nd bell will look on the front door, our guests are probably getting tired of having to call us when they’re at our doorsteps..lol

I was thinking of adding a wireless doorbell. Found some on ebay for under $20, like this GE:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&item=270342015525

Also HD has one on sale just for today:
http://www.homedepot.ca/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/HammerDropView?storeId=10051&catalogId=10051&langId=-15

Can anyone suggest a good brand and that requires changing the batteries rarely?

We inherited the wireless door bell when we bought our home. It seems to work well. One thing to note though. It seems that one of our neighbours have the same model, or at least one that uses the same frequency, so when the neighbour has guests and ring their door bells, our chime goes off. After some initial puzzlement before we figured this out, it was freaky to have the door bell go off at night, run downstairs, only to find no one at the door....

I added a Carlon Extend-A-Chime, works well. This device wires into my wired door bell system and sends a wireless chime to speakers which I plug into walls. No batteries required :)

Carlon also has fully wireless expandable door bell systems too. I believe batteries are required once every one or two years.
