Hello, I have a problem with my inlaws smoking in the garage specially with a 7.5 month pregnant wife. I want to install a smoke detector in the garage to annoy the hell out of them so they smoke outdoors, thier excuses "its too cold out/too hot out" , I don't care about the weather... I care about the health of my family.

I'm looking for a really LOUD 9v smoke detector.
What do you think of the Kidde photoelectic smoke alarm with tamper proof locking pin? (http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10051&langId=-1&catalogId=10053&productId=100145111&N=10000003+90021)

What would you recommend? The garage is all drywalled and finished so i can't hard wire it but might be able to connect it to garage door plug.

Thanks

They all loud but the chances are they won't be triggered by cigarette smoke. With you requirements you probably should look at the cheap brand which prone to false alarms.

And honestly the whole idea does not sound good for me. This schema may work to deter kids from smoking by alerting you but for adult and probably senior...no. You will end up fighting so why not start fighting right away (assuming you already exercised all other peaceful options).

I've told my wife to tell her sister and brother not to smoke in the garage/indoors serveral times and nothing happens...

I will try out the cheap ones...

I just feel like my wife and I are being bullied and taken advantage of.

Kick the inlaws out. Tell them no smoking inside the garage or they have to find another place to live. Set up a nice pedestal ashtray outside as a peace offering. Maybe a park bench too.

have to agree that you should deal with the root issue which is the inlaws smoking.

If it is your place then set down the rules and if they don't want to follow them; out they go. If it is a joint place (or theirs) then put your kids health first and move out.

If the idea with the alarm is just to annoy them you might as well go big ... hide in the garage with fire extinguisher and when you see flame ... use it.

They're all over thirty and should know what my wife and I mean. My wife and I pay all the bills but the house is under sister in laws name. Wifey doesn't want trouble, I don't either, but I'm getting fed up of telling her siblings... the parents can't control them...

I don't know, we'll see what happens... this is what happens when there are extended families in one roof.

Thanks for the replies
