The Honest Ed's of K-town is closing down.

Star article from today (http://www.thestar.com/living/article/621007).
"...one of the greatest independent retail stores in urban Canada." (http://www.intelligencer.ca/ArticleDisplay.aspx?e=1529396)
CKWS story here (http://www.ckwstv.com/index.cfm?page=news&id=516)
Retail change/evolution happens, but sadly the only sure thing about Princess St. now is potholes!

I remember this store from my student days in Kingston.
Those of you in mid-sized towns who still have independent retailers go and buy something from them. Shopping will be a much less interesting thing to do when all there is are chain stores and the internet.

I remember them from my student days as well. I also remember being amazed that someone actually manned the elevator at a discount store.

I've been a student here for nearly 6 years, and I've never actually set foot inside the store.
I've been meaning to go for a few months though, since I learned they have cheap pint glasses with brewery branding. Guess I'll finally go once the sale starts.

Yes! That was awesome. I also remember that they had a decent selection of sports jerseys and such in the basement which we decked ourselves out in before heading on a massive road trip to follow the Habs in the playoffs.
I also bought a little saw there for 99 cents in order to cut down a little Christmas tree for the residence room of a girl I was interested in.
Those were the days!
That'll be a big hole to fill in downtown Kingston. RIP S&R.

We won't ask where exactly in the ghetto you cut the tree down, but which residence was she in? (If it was "all girls", you run the risk of dating yourself!)

That's really too bad. I shopped there a number of times when I lived in Kingston. They had a pretty good selection and good prices all things considered.

She was in Vic, with me. Not the same floor though, because that would just be wrong!

Haha floor-cest. Gosh so much of that running around.
Anyways, being a student here and having worked with S&R on numerous times for club events and fundraisers I am truly sad to see it go. It always had a homey small-town feel to it and was uniquely Kingston and Queen's. But alas I guess it couldn't compete with the larger-chain stores. Hope the Jerseys get a good discount tomorrow.
Here's to hoping that something OTHER than a chain moves into there.

Too bad that S&R is closing down.. I havent been in there in so long. Used to love going there as a kid to get the free juice and cookies. hehe
Who shops downtown anymore anyways? West end is the place to be.
Not tryin to be an ass or anything but how is this a hot deal? Does anyone know what the deals are going to be? any % floating around yet? No one in this thread has mentioned anything about deals.. just chatting about past experience. Thats completely fine and all.. but this should be moved to Shopping Discussion I think.
Sorry, Just my opinion.

Queen's alum here at well and I remember going to S&R a handful of times while I was there. After Zeller's closed down it was the only department store option for students within walking distance. It`s a neat store, Honest Ed's style, and a shame that it'll be closing down.

Queen's alum here as well. RFD was started after all by a Queen's Commerce Grad...
It's very sad that a cornerstone of the downtown core in Kingston is closing. Just they don't close the amazing ice cream store near the water front. Something mountain...... As well as the other amazing restaurents. (Chez Piggy's, Wooden Head's, Chien Noir, etc)

White Mountain I think.
On the plus side, they now have a Dollarama on Princess. I'm sure that didn't help S&R, but it would have been nice to have a Dollarama when I was there.

:arrowl: Queens here too. :cheesygri I'm so sad to see S&R go, I didn't shop there much but it was a neat place to visit every once in a while.
Also, That would be White Mountain Ice Cream - absolutely amazing stuff. http://www.whitemountainicecream.com/locations.html :)

Queen's prof here.....blame the property taxes among other things for booting S&R out the downtown, 100% increase recently. That and greedy landlords are killing the downtown.

Cant say im shocked by this but its sure a blow to the downtown. Another factor in it happening now is that section of Princess will be completely torn up next year for reconstruction from the sewers up. The long standing card merchant ad body shop are other recent closures. Still a lot better then most downtowns but vacancies are growing. Dlollarama did come..and the other dollar stores went under.
"Here's to hoping that something OTHER than a chain moves into there. "
its not expected to remain retail. Maybe the first floor will (hopefully). The city is looking for office space and is considering it. Otherwise maybe renovated ino apartments or hotel (eg big version of the Prince george)

what do you teach, could be interesting...

Wow, never knew there are so many ppl from Queen's here.
S&R was where I went to buy most of my stuffs when i moved out from rest in my 2nd year.
It seems like the city is really doing poorly these days.
Ben&Jerry closed down due to unpaid rent, rumors about Food Basics on barrack st closing down as well. It's pretty sad to see the city as a whole these days.
and A prof??!! in commerce as well. I believe that's one of the highest paying faculty in queen's isnt it?!
jackwest
Apr 22nd, 2009, 02:25 AM
yes, highest paid, because they are the smartest
that's how the world works.
moko
Apr 22nd, 2009, 02:53 AM
haha, not necessarily. Business is where the money is, hence ppl who are in that field will usually make more money. Ppl in chemistry or physics are in general smarter than commerce students, but that's just not where the money is, thus less money.
Just like comparing professional athletes. Ppl playing badminton make less money than some scrub playing in NBA or PGA, doesnt mean they are worse athlete than the golfer or bball player, it's just not where the money is.

i only checked out the first floor but most things seem to be 10-20% off
i got myself an official jays alternate "T" hat for $30 minus 15% off
Might get a jersey if further discounts come up later...please post additional discounts as they come!

Protest, vigil or professionally disgruntled looking for a place to happen, you decide. Give downtown a chance?

Yeah it's quite sad that they are closing.
Just wondering what kind of clearance sale they are having? Is it a % off store wide?

BMus '99 checking in.
RIP S&R! You've earned your rest.
I worked across the street at Sir Gawain and would go to S&R for drinks, gum, and candy almost every shift. It was a great place.

Was in there today...nothing would be a deal to an rfder. 10-15%, 20% off shoes, but that isn't a real deal.
But it was busy, never seen that many people in line at the cashes. Some empty section of shelves here and there. there won't be anything worth buying left by the time it comes to having to get rid of it at high discount. 20% off their shoe prices is nothing, but lots of people were looking.
the faygo pop machine was the best part, cheapest cold drink downtown.

That elevator with the attendant is one of my earliest memories, along with the creepy underground parking. I was kinda cool to go back there in my later years at Queens. I'm surprised it lasted as long as it did. So who's gonna get that scale that tells your fortune and restore it?

So sad. I grew up in Kingston and S&R has always been a part of my life, now as a unique shopping experience when we go back for visits.
The great independants left are all closing. Sad state of the world.

Blame it on our bad city council. I can't believe how poorly run Kingston is 'sigh'. Body Shop closed down on Princess :( I like walking there during lunch. Oh well I usually shop at Rio Can anyway!! I'll go to S & R on Monday to see what's on sale but doubt anything good. I rather they pave Brock St before gutting up downtown Princess St.

gonna miss S&R... from the creepy, haunted house feeling, to the uneven floors, and the elevator man.... It always felt like I was going back in time somehow (but into bizarro land!) when I strolled through.
Thanks for the memories...

Nothing to say in regards to S&R, but I fell the need to say hi. Gotta love that Queen's pride! LOL
