That website is giving me a headache. They seem like good deals, but the site is so confusing that I quickly gave up looking into it.

Jeez, that is one sleazy looking web site. I like bikini-clad bimbos as much as the next guy, but come on.. all the flashing graphics and fighter jet clipart and crap to sell home automation equipment? Even if their products are good, the site makes the company look like a joke.

This company has some questionable integrity judging from their web site and advertising.
For example, this product has thousands of uses....

Thanks OP am going to give it a try! The lighting system itself has gotten good reviews from what I could see. I agree the website is very cheesy, even the reviewers make fun of it!

How do these compare to Zwave or Insteon? Anyone know?

Not nearly as reliable as Insteon, ie. commands tend to get 'missed' often, and the build quality of the components is generally lower. But it is a cheap way to get into home automation. Insteon does have some X10 compatibility, so you can progressively upgrade later if you get hooked.

Jeez, that is one sleazy looking web site.
 This is also well known.
If you are looking for info about X10, it is better to look at other sites from google. I only go there to order when there is a deal (find the item and click Add to Cart as quickly as I can, looking at all the other "sales" give me a headache too :) ). As a mail order company, they are OK, as they ship from Mississauga; so no brokerage or custom fee to worry about, and they seem to be reliable so far.
And if you sign up for their "newsletter", you will be bombarded with their "sales" emails once or twice a day!

Holy Cow....this is one of the worst designed website ever.
What does this woman in Bikini with fake boob has anything to do with the actual product? Is it suppose to remotely turn her boobs on and off?

Also, this banner is suggesting it has 1000's of uses and one of the use is to shoot girls in Bikinis...I wish I have beach front property.

For those who want more info on various X10 components (specs etc) and can't stand the flashy web site, you can check out their wiki site:
http://kbase.x10.com/wiki/Home_Automation
Or their Pro line web site where they sell many of the same item under a different model name:
http://x10pro.com/pro/catalog.html
Or check out retailers' web site such as smarthome.com or aartech.ca

I have an ancient X10 unit that uses a SERIAL port for communication between PC and the control unit... are there any 'recent' X10 customers that can tell me if there is a USB control unit now, and if the software has improved beyond Windows 3.1 quality?

Hahaa I have that same software and ghetto Serial port device. I think this is their new one:

But I dunno if I want to shell out $49 for the new adaptor & "software modules"

Yeah, the new ones are USB & i think the improvement is that it runs independent of your computer (ie plug it in another room after programming & it functions).
Can't say how the software compares to the old..but i believe the addition of macros is a significant improvement over old versions.
When i got my $49 package, it also came with one lamp module and a mini controller thing..fyi.
i agree, the website is totally cheesy & gives the product a bad name..but i'm quite impressed with what it can do.
I only use it for simple control of lamps etc..one advantage of using them as timers over regular timers is that you can quickly modify them, they will adjust to daylight savings & you can program things based on sunrise/sunset which can be variable from day to day. Also, the use of macros allows me to program user defined dim % and create simulated sunrise of my lights.
Just info for anyone wondering why they might use this stuff.

This post rocks!
Apparently the X-10 stuff isn't too bad. As some previous posters said, it's a nice "gateway drug" into home automation. I haven't tried it personally, but I've considered it (after all, I can only take their site in small doses).

X10 sells a bunch of crap items. I bought one of those wireless cameras and the picture was terrible. It was so blurry you can't see anything.
And they have these sales everyday, nothing hot about them. Some of the ads say lowest price ever, limited quantities, etc. but a few days later, they pop up again with the same price or even lower. I get their stupid emails at least twice or more a day, so don't give them your email address.
The only good thing is Customer Service. I had no trouble returning things but I had to pay postage.

6 Wireless Door/Window sensors + Keychain remote: US$19.99

The newer CM15A (with USB interface) is more reliable (no more removing the batteries for the unresponsive CM11A). It has built-in all codes transceiver, so you don't need to buy a separate transceiver, and it has larger memory. The software has been updated and it now has conditional macros (if... ).
