There are quite a few comments on the Spinpoint in the American thread (where it's $80, btw) that might help your decision-making:

I believe some of those posts are also Newegg.com posts. When that one guy said he paid $80, I think that was in USD. I remember paying $180 for one last year when they first came out, and $130 a few months later. I've had two of these drives working in a RAID1 for almost a year, and so far no problems.

The initial batch of these drives did have a high failure rate, but I believe drives manufactured after January 2008 had the problem(s) fixed.

Someone brought up that point in the Slickdeals thread I mentioned, but then someone put it in context by showing the 1%'s for the other brands too. Check it out. With the exception of Seagate, all are in line with each other more or less. WD is looking good.

1 Egg Rating %

Samsung - 14%
Hitachi - 17%
Seagate - 37%
WD - 7%
WD Black - 5%

same boat as you.. hope it doesnt take long..
just cancelled my NCIX WD10EADS order for this drive

i think purchasing at NCIX is also an option (price match) and they have express shipping for $10, but if you live outside of ontario, you arent paying PST.. so $4 for express shipping.. orders above 100$ if you can find a filler item = $5.99 shipping

How far do you need to dig? Just click on on this http://c1.neweggimages.com/WebResource/Themes/2005/Nest/policyQuote.gif icon right next to Handling and it tells you what it is. Same thing with the Shipping.

Note: I'm not attacking you, I just surprised that every time there is a deal with free shipping from Newegg.ca, someone always comes into the thread bitching about the "handling fee" when they could have just clicked the icon first.

If you're going to use this drive for an OS install then it's terrible. This drive is optimized for high speed sequential reads/writes but NOT random read/writes. As a storage drive though, this is pretty good.

Best bang for the buck OS drive right now: WD Black, then partition off the first 40-100GB for OS use only, this will reduce the access times in that partition to under 5ms.

I almost bought one of these as an OS drive but after reading HKPolice's post (thx) and doing some googling on the HD103UJ, it appears random access speed is a poor 13.7ms, being beating beat out by Seagate 7200.11 and Hitachi 7K1000, and obliterated by the premium WD drives. Oh well, saved $100+ tonight...
However, as a storage drive I wonder who is more reliable, Samsung or the WD Greens?

i have 2 in a dns 323. Bought it over the wd green since I wanted a drive that i could still use in a desktop and the green is just too slow.

At the the time the f1 1tb were around the quietest, fastest, coolest, best power consumption drive in its class. If you wanted faster you went wd black but more power consumption. If you wanted power savings you went green but their wicked slow. But if you wanted all of the above its the best bang for buck shot your gonna find. My 320 sata wd is a hell of lot louder than these f1's their virtually silent except at spin up. Even spinning you can barely hear it

They're still fine. People are just less than enthused about them these days because of the whole 7200.11 failure fiasco. (and rightly so)

I've had the following Seagate drives malfunctioned on me:
2 x 300GB Seagate Baracuda 7200.8 (SATA)
1 x 80GB Seagate Baracuda (ATA)
1 x 18GB Seagate Cheetah 15000RPM U160 (SCSI)
1 x 40GB Maxtor DiamondMax (ATA)(before Seagate bought Maxtor)

The two 300GB drives started to experience problems within 2 years. Seagate replaced them with 7200.10 drives, which I sold right away.

The 80GB drive lasted about 3 years, and then experienced problems. I couldn't get it RMA'd because I purchased the drive a few months before their warranty policy changed to 5 years.

The SCSI drive started giving me problems within 2 years. Seagate replaced it with a U320 drive.

The 40GB Maxtor drive didn't display any symptoms before crapping out, it just flat out crashed after about a year. Keep in mind this was before Seagate bought them out. In any case, I RMA'd the drive and sold it right away.

As you can see, I've had first hand experience with Seagate drives and they've always failed me. I've only had one Seagate drive work for more than 3 years, and I still use it from time to time in an enclosure.

You don't get charged customs fees when you order from Newegg.ca. Yes, their warehouses are in the US and the goods have to come across the border but all customs/brokerage fees are handled by Newegg and all you have to pay is what is asked for at the Newegg checkout.

On a side note, can the mods/RFD Staff put a sticky post regarding Newegg's policies? There are always multiple complaints in each Newegg thread about their Handling Fees, even the deals are advertised as having Free Shipping. Many people don't realize it's the PST/GST/HST, and it needs to be explained to them. Maybe anyone who posts a Newegg.ca deal can put a link to the sticky post so people will stop complaining?

I believe the low 'min' for Samsung is being used as C drive.
So the (reading) performance is neck to neck with a ST, but it's better in CPU usage.

I just called NCIX to price match and they wouldnt do it because this is a special order item for them - takes 2-4 days to get in..

might as well order it from Newegg...paying the same...waiting roughly the same amount time...if NCIX doesnt want to match it, i'm not gonna bother putting much effort into it..

One on the way from Newegg here too! woot!

According to their stock checker, it says they have several drives in stock though. At both BC and ON warehouses.

Most likely their suppliers. NCIX doesn't actually have any in its possession at their warehouse in Richmond.

can anyone confirm neweggs $1 extra charge will prevent UPS from their were going to rape you and theres nothing you can do about it cuz u want your **** charge?

i ****ing hate ordering ups and strongly avoid any company who ships only ups.. but would love to pickup a couple of these drives to expand my raid :)

From Newegg's site: "Tax is applied to the items in your order as well as the $1.00 USD customs brokerage fee."

The so called 'customs brokerage' fee is what UPS gets you with. I had a rude awakening with that when me and my gf moved up here from the States after we shipped some stuff to us but marked it as token $50. But yeah, I've had 3 items shipped from Newegg.ca to me in Canada, and I've never had to pay stupidPS fees. I almost always use and encourage people to ship to me via USPS/Canadapost.

It was in stock on NCIX the day of this thread, I checked. Few hours later after this thread, NCIX lists it as no longer in stock.

Was anyone able to get it price matched when NCIX had stock?

for some reason NCIX is real difficult when it comes down to PMing this drive..
PCV had a sale for $99.95 a week ago and they waited 5 business days (until PCV no longer has this drive for sale) to tell me they are not doing it.

I'm thinking of buying this drive with a Rosewill RX35 enclosure (also sold at Newegg) to go with my new HD Bell 6131 pvr reciever. Would it be a good fit for a pvr receiver? Would heat be a problem if it's always turned on? Thanks

I was torn between the WD green and this Samsung but I went with the Samsung for my blu-ray based htpc and couldn't be happier. I ripped several of my expensive Blu-ray disks to the Samsung without any compression and play them directly off the Samsung.
