I'm assuming that "2 way radios" also fall into the category of electronics...if it doesn't please move this to the proper area.

I am interesting in looking for some rugged, good quality 2 way radios. Preferably they are powered by AA / AAA batteries (or 9 volt if it happens to be the case...), have decent range (even in densely wooded areas) and come under $150 a pair. I'm looking to buy about 6 - 8 of these radios for a big camping event later on this year. None of the users are GMRS license holders so a FRS / 2 Watt GMRS radio (since it will only be used in Canada) enabled radio seems like the way to go.

I've looked into some of the major retailers around my area (Canadian Tire, Walmart, Home Depot, Home Hardware and Circuit City) but what they offer are pretty much the same and the reviews don't seem to be that good for the "higher-end" units.

much appreciated!

I have a pair of Cobra radios I purchased from Canadian Tire a few years ago. They have a 5 km range but I have never tested the actual range.

They are decent. I have heard that double the distance is available now.

Best part, they use rechargable AA Batteries.

I've tested the Midland 20mile radios the weather proof (tested on snow and light rain) still work like new.

I don't get 20miles but tested for sure they go 3km for when me and my buddies went camping plus good communicating tool for driving in convoys. Got them off from ebay for 60bux CAD including shipping for a pair of radios.

I also have the old 2km motorola range is more like half km.

Range depends on weather and terrain.

are there any of these devices that work like a phone? (two way simultaneous communication without having to press a button to talk)

I have seen any radios that offer full duplex communications.

You are better off using a cell phone with MY5 and just call each other.
