Comes with Windows XP installed.
OS X, stock wireless and mic not working, so that's out.
If you have a 1000HE, what's your preferred OS and why?
Anyone using Windows 7?
Which ubuntu version works out of the box?
Your thoughts on this much appreciated, thanks.

I don't have a 1000HE, but I use XP Pro on my MSI Wind. Main reason is that it's the lightest Windows that still has features that I need, and runs all the software I need it to. My Wind plays back 720p with MPC-HC + CoreAVC just fine - I haven't found a codec/player combo on any other OS that runs it well.

After reading all the linux bugs on the 1000HE, Windows 7 looked like a better option, however, no coreAVC support. Thanks for being intuitive about 720p playback which is important to me as most of our media is HD, so XP it is.
I suppose I could tinker with dual booting options.

I recommend Ubuntu 8.04 LTS. I've installed it on a dozen laptops and rarely have any problems that a quick google search can't fix. Wireless is a snap to configure.
Dual booting is always a safe option, but Ubuntu goes one step further and lets you set it up within a windows install (while sacrificing speed). Either way, the price is right!

Win7 isn't meant for a netbook. Are you really having that much trouble getting used to XP?

Microsoft is trying to svelte it so it will be suitable for netbooks as well. Many folks are actually holding off on netbook sales until Win7 is released with it just so they have a legit OS to play with.
That said, I think you're right. XP is the best option. For people who want to pretty it up, there are many hacks for it to customize your desktop/displays/taskbar etc to make it look however you want.

I know that - M$ is trying to do this so they can end support once and for all for XP, instead of having to twice extend the date, 1st because Vista wasn't widely accepted, and 2nd because of the arrival of Netbooks.
IMO, for the purpose of netbook, XP is more than enough to suit everyone's needs. Atom still isn't a very strong processor to be putting Win7 onto it, and having Win7 basically means manufacturers can't put 512MB ram into netbooks anymore... even 1GB is pushing it.

Ubuntu just released the 9.04 netbook remix. You can try that.
Also I found this, http://www.eeebuntu.org/. It's 8.10 version and comes with all the drivers for eeePC.
I just got my 1000he and will be looking into which ubuntu version to install.
Cheers

I use MPC Klite Standard+CoreAVC (external filter) set at the highest setting on S.H.E. and no 720p mkv I've thrown at it has stuttered yet.
What would be the Linux distro equivalent?

I would go with XP.
But...do you REALLY need the netbook now???

I sense some upgrades are in for the future.

nVidia ion looks sweet but the price will be $500+ in the beginning. Wireless N, bluetooth, 6cell may push it even higher. Our other notebook was a big honkin 17" Dell. Since we already have a powerful HTPC in the basement, and a WDTV in the bedroom, I couldn't resist the 1000HE for $460 everything in to our door, nice and portable for travelling. That pricepoint for an nVidia ion netbook with those ASUS specs may not be available for another year :)
