WASHINGTON — General Motors Corp. is recalling 1.5 million vehicles because of potential engine fires.

GM says there have been no reports of any fires or injuries.

Some of the recalled vehicles are no longer in production. The recall includes the 1998-1999 Oldsmobile Intrigue, the 1997-2003 Pontiac Grand Prix, 1997-2003 Buick Regal, and the 1998-2003 Chevrolet Lumina, Monte Carlo and Impala.

It involves vehicles with a 3.8-litre V6 engine. The government says drops of oil could fall into the exhaust system and cause a fire in the engine.

GM spokesman Kerry Christopher says it was a precautionary measure for consumers.

Can this not come at a worse time for gm? Are they worthy of taxpayer money to save them? BTW if you drive any of the cars mentioned above get your car repaired because you don't want it to burn up.

I've been working on cars for years and I've seen all kinds of fluid leaks on all kinds of cars be whipped around by moving parts and sprayed on the exhaust... And I've never seen it become an issue.

But this is definitely a mark of GM quality... boooo! Honda for the win!

Actually, if you owns any of the mentioned cars, or any GM car for that matter, you DO want it to burn up. To bad this "fault" doesn't seem like the type of thing that will happed without putting the driver in danger.

Vehicle Make / Model: Model Year(s):

BUICK / REGAL 1997-2003
CHEVROLET / IMPALA 2000-2003
CHEVROLET / LUMINA 1998-1999
CHEVROLET / MONTE CARLO 1998-2003
OLDSMOBILE / INTRIGUE 1998-1999
PONTIAC / GRAND PRIX 1997-2003

Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP. Mfr's Report Date: APR 08, 2009
NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID Number: 09V116000
EA07008

NHTSA Action Number: EA07008

Component: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
Potential Number of Units Affected: 1497516
Summary:

GENERAL MOTORS IS RECALLING 1,497,516 MY 1997-2003 BUICK REGAL, MY 1998-2003 CHEVROLET LUMINA, MONTE CARLO AND IMPALA, MY 1998-1999 OLDSMOBILE INTRIGUE, MY 1997-2003 PONTIAC GRAND PRIX VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH A 3.8L V6 NATURALLY ASPIRATED ENGINE. SOME OF THESE VEHICLES HAVE A CONDITION IN WHICH DROPS OF ENGINE OIL MAY BE DEPOSITED ON THE EXHAUST MANIFOLD THROUGH HARD BRAKING.

Consequence:
IF THE MANIFOLD IS HOT ENOUGH AND THE OIL RUNS BELOW THE HEAT SHIELD, IT MAY IGNITE INTO A SMALL FLAME AND MAY SPREAD TO THE PLASTIC SPARK PLUG WIRE CHANNEL AND BEYOND INCREASING THE RISK OF AN ENGINE COMPARTMENT FIRE.

Remedy:
DEALERS WILL REMOVE THE SPARK PLUG WIRE RETENTION CHANNEL AT THE FRONT OF ENGINE AND INSTALL TWO NEW SPARK PLUG WIRE RETAINERS FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING MAY 2009. OWNERS MAY CONTACT CHEVROLET AT 1-800-630-2438, OLDSMOBILE AT 1-800-630-6537, AND PONTIAC AT 1-800-620-7668 OR HTTP://WWW.PONTIAC.COM OR HTTP:WWW.GMOWNERCENTER.COM.

Notes:
GM RECALL NO. 90047. OWNERS MAY ALSO CONTACT THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION'S VEHICLE SAFETY HOTLINE AT 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), OR GO TO HTTP://WWW.SAFERCAR.GOV .

The fix is minor but the consequences could be significant.

Nevertheless, I wouldn't slam any manufacturer for this type of recall. Toyota recalled 2006-07 Yaris due to fire risk and a number of Lexus models between 2006 and 2008 for a different fire risk. Honda has had a number of recalls for fire risks: 2005-2008 Acura RLs and 2004-2008 TLs and there was a pesky issue of a couple of dozen 2003/04 CR-Vs that burned up - although that didn't result in a recall. 2007 Altimas had 3 NHTSA recalls - one of which included a risk of fire. Ford, Mazda, Audi, VW, etc. - regardless of the manufacturer, they've all had 'em.

Bad timing. GM recalled 277,000 cars in March for bad shifters. Fortunately (or not, depending how you look at it,) only 75,000 of those had actually been sold.

There's also word of problems with the new Camaro's transmission leaking, though I haven't found any news released yet.

For all those bashing GM, please remember they are recalling cars that are 6 -12 years old.

I'm sure if it was Honda/Toyota everyone would be praising them for doing a good job recalling cars that are out of warranty.

If Toyota or Honda does it, it's because they care about their customers' safety and to protect their own asses.

But when GM does it, they are just shooting themselves in the foot.

If it's the manual transmission that's a Japanese equipment :D

OTOH the automatic is the same they've used in other vehicles and I've read no such reports about abnormal leaking.

As for this recall, it's a safety issue. One ****ing idiot mechanic I went to years ago accidentally pulled out the hose before the dispenser finished pumping oil into the crankcase and oil spilled all over hot engine parts. I had to pressure wash the whole engine afterward with a special degreaser.

So how do you get your car recalled, do you get a free fix if your car is on the list.

From what I've heard it's made in India. This is from a lineworker, so take it for what it's worth.

Get your VIN off of the car and call a dealer with it.
