View Full Version : Noise in lower gears

When I drive in 1st gear at around 2000 RPM, there's this weird chippy noise coming from my engine, so I switch to 2nd gear, and if i accelerate, this chippy noise starts again. I then switch to 3rd gear, and this chippy noise gets less noisy when i accelerate and by the time i'm in 4th gear, it's pretty much gone (when accelerating).
I thought it was my engine so I tested it in Neutral, and pressed down the gas pedal to check for that noise but it was fine, just a regular engine noise.
Could there problems with my transmission?

I'm assuming that this is a standard tranny. What is the year and make of your vehicle??

could be a lot of things from a loose heat shield, a clutch release bearing, power steering belt, pressure plate etc...

If it is a chirping noise, that used to be an indicator that the clutch needed adjustment as the throw out bearing was slightly rubbing. I do not know if yours is a self adjusting clutch or not. I am presuming that the noise goes away if you put your foot on the clutch? (that is an additional indicator).
No big deal now but, eventually you may need some clutch work. How many kms on the vehicle?

120 k KM. And yes, if i press down the clutch, the noise goes away. Is it something major? How much do you think the adjustment will cost? I also have to add that it doesn't make that noise when I'm not pressing the gas pedal (cruising).

I don't know how you drive and I don't know if you have had the clutch changed yet but, you may be getting near the end of the clutch life. Before all the perfect drivers come on here and say they have gone 200,00 kms or more without a clutch change, it is a possibility and not a fact that the clutch may be worn.
How much to adjust the clutch or have a look at it, I cannot tell you but I would think that you are talking an hours worth of labour. Should be no parts involved. Call around and get a few estimates.
The noise is still there when you are cruising but just overcome by other noises. Here is a bit of an explanation
