So, i am in the market to buy a used xbox 360. What should i be aware of when buying it? I have heard abt 360s RroDing so how do i know which model has less chance of overheating and dying on me? Whats the advantages of having a HD? if i get a model without the HD, can i get a separate HD later? I dont mind if the 360 is modded either:cheesygri.
Or should i wait for the next 360 successor?
Thx guys

I'm not sure used 360's are worth it.
If it were me.. I'd check to make sure it had an HDMI port (the original model from release date did not).
Plug it into the internet and make sure it hasn't been banned from live. This is the #1 reason I'd avoid buying a used 360, because you never know if its banned or not.
use google to find webpages on how to identify if its a falcon model. Starting with the falcon model the rate of RRoD's were dramatically reduced.
That being said, an arcade model 360 goes on sale for 179.99 every so often.. you can probably find a 20gig hard drive for cheap (enough to handle your saved games) and you're good to go.

If you wait a little bit longer I'm sure the next batch of Arcade models will be the latest Jasper chipset which everyone is trying to get their hands on. If you can pick it up for $179.99 than I think it is much better than buying used and not saving that much and getting no warranty either. Unless the savings is more than 50% off retail I would say just buy it from a reputable store.
Besides the Arcade models come with a 256mb memory card which is more than enough for saved games, at least for me it is. I was going to go out to the RCSS and pick up a hard drive they have on clearance for $29.44 but the location that appears to have it in stock is way out of the way from where I live.

hmm. the jasper chipset sounds like the one to wait for then. any one knows how long before this batch is released?

hmm, found this info online. posting it here for other people like me looking for a 360
:arrowd:
Valhalla
Launched Approx: Late 2009
CPU: 65nm or 45nm
GPU: 65nm or 45nm
HDMI: Yes
Power Supply: Unknown
Valhalla is predicted to be the final (or at least scheduled) revision of the Xbox 360 before the next generation Xbox is launched. Apart from the possibility of the CPU and GPU being further reduced to 45nm reducing cost of production (which will help with price decreases in retail) it is believed that both the GPU and CPU will share the same piece of board together. The benefits of this (along with the reduced need for cooling systems with a much cooler 45nm chip) is that the entire internal board within the console takes up a great deal less space (possible as much as 30% less) and as such the Valhalla could lead to an Xbox 360 Slim version. The console having a redesign and being far smaller in height or width. Due to the Hard Drive limitations it is believe that it will be shortened along its long length rather than its narrower width leading to a machine upto 30% shorter when stood upright.
With a smaller design, smaller cooling systems and lower power supply it is believed this could be the most reliable, smallest and quietest of the Xbox 360 family.

If that is true, Canada won't see Valhalla consoles until mid-late 2010 if Jasper is any indication.

Be nice, you wouldn't want him buying a PS3 instead, right?
+1 it's not worth it imo. You just don't know how people treat their stuff. The unit could be banned, previously modded/unmodded, inadequately ventilated, full of smoke or dog hair, dropped, etc. If you hunt around on the deals forum and aren't in a hurry, you can usually snag a premium in the ~$250 range or at least get a free game thrown in.
If you're determined to buy it used, ensure all the holographic stickers are intact and it's not more than 3 years old, so the original warranty applies for RROD. Check for HDMI if that's what you're using for your TV. Refuse any previously modded units (unless that's what you want). Play around with the dashboard and try installing a game to make sure the HDD is not corrupt. Connect online to make sure the unit is not banned. Ask the seller why they're getting rid of it. If anything is fishy, trust your gut and look elsewhere.

true say gaming consoles are used a lot.
but with exclusive titles such as God Of War (huge fan!) and Little Big Planet on the ps3, i mite have to give a bit more thought into whether its a 360 or ps3 i wanna get.
or maybe even the best of both worlds;)

I purchased my 360 used on these forums and could not be happier.
I paid $300 for all the stuff, sold off things I did not need and ended up paying $160 for a arcade with 60 gig hard drive, plus a wireless controller.
It's a falcon btw which may be why is was cheap but yea... the warrenty was unregistered so I just put my own name and works perfectly.
