View Full Version : Best budget 780G mobo?? (or mobo/cpu combo)

Looking to build a very energy efficient torrent server/HTPC.
Looking at the 780g mobo options, looking to find a sub $100 mobo (w/ shipping). Will most likely go with the cheapest dual core AM2 I can find as well (looking at $44 BE-2300 1.9Ghz dual core on newegg now but will consider other options of course).
Looking to keep this mobo/cpu/RAM combo under say $180 shipped?
Thanks
Tim

If you are planning for TrueHD audio, don't get 780G as it is handicapped by design. If DTS 5.1 is all you care (which is probably what most people want at this point), 780G is a good value purchase. Also, to make use of the full potential of 780G, you need a CPU that is capable of running HyperTransport 3.0. Phenom is ideal, but the Athlon X2 7750e could work too.

Thanks for the replies guys. That Foxconn board is micro-ATX and I was hoping to use my old case/PSU. I'm guessing I can't bolt in a micro-ATX in a standard case?
I don't really care about TrueHD audio, not at this point anyways. If I ever get fancy enough for that I can always upgrade my sound system and the computer with a better video/sound card.
This is a budget system so I'm not sure I can fully take advantage of HyperTransport 3.0 within my price point. Also I want to keep powerconsumption really low and would prefer a 45W CPU.. any of these that support HyperTransport?
Thanks for the help guys

Can't seem to find this anywhere for sale online?
Any reason why you chose this over others mentioned?
Thanks

GF8200 is still a better chipset even if you don't care about DTS-HD. And, it's around the same price. I believe on the 780G, there are problems doing surround sound via HDMI.

mATX will fit into normal ATX cases.

Sorry for being outdated, but I've honestly never heard of Jetway. Is it new?

Well, they have been around since 1998 and they mostly make mini-ITX and ITX board (correct me if im wrong). Its not until recently they release mid-range mobo.
If you look at the 790gx mobo by Sapphire

It is clear that it is the rebranded jetway.

For that price, I'll take the GA-MA790GP-UD4H over jetway anytime.

After $10 giftcard free shipping...$15 rebate and one tax if you live in Ontario, I don't think it will be much more expensive than buying the Jetway from Newegg.
BTW for OP Gigabyte GA-MA78GM-US2H http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=36026&vpn=GA%2DMA78GM%2DUS2H&manufacture=Gigabyte&promoid=1060
this should be a pretty good option.

We build with the Asus M3A78-EM. Would be great for HTPC I imagine.
Vid: HDMI/DVI/VGA/Displayport
Audio: Optical, 4x headphone out, 1x headphone line in, 1x headphone in, header for digital coax
Misc: Firewire, 6x USB + 3x headers
I'm sure you've done the research, but I think the 780G will do 1080P output with a sempron 3000.
Great board, we've probably built about 40 of em in the past few months.

I got it when it was still $109. At the current price I would go with the Giga board. I never have any giga board but from OCN, it seems that the 790gx giga board is solid and has the best look and layout.

The other aspect you should consider is your receiver. Does it support HDMI? If not, there is really no point to bother with audio over HDMI since you would probably end up using TOSLINK for audio anyways. And if you use TOSLINK, that HDMI bandwidth limitation on 780G is moot. Driver support wise, since 780G has been around for over a year. I would guess AMD's driver would be more mature than nVidia's counterpart. (I can't really tell since I don't own the nVidia chipset.)
There is one small problem with 780G is that you could still get screen tearing when playing back 1080p clips with a HT 1.0 processor (like the old Athlon X2). I read you would get pulldown detection support for HT 3.0 processors and that would eliminate the tearing issue. So if you are going for 780G, by all means get a HT 3.0 capable CPU (Phenom or Athlon X2 7750).

I have the Gigabyte 780G mobo since it first came out. Great mobo and everything works pretty good except the really important thing - hardware acceleration. I got it to work before (still occasionally jerky) but it'd be gone afterwards. I am about to give up and pick up a ATI4550 discrete card to put in it.
I was really big on these onboard all-in-one mobo in the past but every single one I got is a dud and has some problem.
A $30 Nvidia 8400GS would pwn any of these all-in-1 mobo.
