Why is the EVGA GTX280 more an a GTX285?

I'm looking for a good price on the GTX280 or GTX285 and seen that Canada Computers has the GTX280 price for a few dollars more. Is there a reason for this? Anywasy I think NCIX has CC beat on these prices anyways.

That is because the GTX280 is out of production. It's old and it's becoming scarce. By simple economics, something which is scarce in supply will have a higher price.

The GTX285, although a superior card to the GTX280 costs less because the market is flooded with those. Supply is high.

The other reason which can cause a product's market price to rise is if demand sharply increases and supply cannot keep up. However, this is not the case with the GTX280 at the moment. That condition happens for instance when a product is first launched. nVidia is especially good at "paper launches" (they announce a new card, but you can't actually find any stock until 2 weeks pass) and that will cause initial prices to be high.

AMD on the other hand not only announces new cards, but actually gives stock to stores in time for the date so the sharp demand versus low supply effect happens less with AMD.

Do you really need a GTX285? Will you be gaming on 24" or larger monitor. The GTX280/5 is a pretty monster card, if you don't have the PC to match then you'll be just wasting your money. You might consider the ATI 4890 as a good alternative.

As for the GTX280/5 as Oversized Rooster mentioned, the 280 is an older card, the 285 brings faster speeds and lower power usage. If you can find a cheap 280 used then it might be worth it, otherwise go with the 285. (if you really need it)

Yes I need it. I've had 3 24" LCD's in the past 3 years. Always trying to find something better. Now I'm looking at upgrading my GTX260. Anyways I just wanted to find out why the price difference on the two cards.

That's how I was able to return my 8800 GT and walk out with $490
