Could someone suggest a good deal on a mid-high end desktop. Will not be used for gaming. My only criteria --- I don't want 64 bit vista because it's not compatible with some of my software and not compatible with my VPN at work. I don't NEED a monitor but would take one if it was a good package deal. thanks.

If you're not gaming, what do you need a high end computer for? AutoCAD?

I think budget (in $) is more useful here ... And yes, you should also let us know how you plan to use your system ...

just want something with good quality components for a decent price. Mid - high end will have adequate usb ports, ability to have 2 monitors, ability to upgrade to Windows 7 down the road if I want to, etc...

How much are you looking to spend and what do you do on it?

A solid Core2Duo system could do everything you need and more for ~$600

Sounds right... Up to $800.
Usual computer stuff without games... Edit pictures, crop videos, download/watch some movies... nothing too complicated but still want a good machine with enough ports to be expandable, enough USB slots for scanner, printer, camera, Blackberry, etc.... good quality components, would like to to still be "adequate" in 3-4 years, etc....
What would you suggest in the 600-800 range?

AMD X3/X4 on a 780G/790GX or C2Q 8xxx on GF9300.

Dell Vostro. Expandable, uses standard ATX12V parts, and it's affordable.

You can even select XP SP3 installed if you'd like. I'd go for 3GB of RAM... but everything else looks good.

Is the Vostro better than the Studio?

http://configure.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?cs=cadhs1&oc=DS540_FS_CHSDFS1&l=en&c=ca&kc=83384

This studio is also $999 and comes with a full HD 24" monitor. Is the vostro a better computer for the same price but a 22 inch analog monitor?

Does anyone know if there's something similar or better at staples or Costco?
