View Full Version : Parents who consider a car as a playtoy

I am totally stunned right now - a neighbour a few houses down has a large backyard - right now their 13/14 year old kid is driving a car around their backyard, fishtailing for kicks - and he has FIVE friends in the car with him - if anything happened and one of those kids got hurt, the parents would have lawsuits up the wazoo!
What is wrong with people?? The liability issues are tremendous!
Not sure of the legalities of this...but just the same, wow....

maybe the parents aren't home and the kids found the car keys.

^ LOL I hope so.
I don't pull those type of stunts but I do think of my Coupe as a toy. I will MOD it, if I can I like Push her. I don't think of it just getting me to A/B.

Even if that is true, the parents may still be on the receiving end of a pile of lawsuits if anyone got hurt.
If I had teenage kids, the car keys would be locked in a safe!!

this takes place with the driver's parents full knowledge - as for the parents of the friends, I don't know...as a parent myself, MY kids would not be in that car...gawd....
boggles the mind...

I wish I had your problems. Alas my backyard is not large enough to park a car in, never mind doing donuts.

Technically is it illegal for a 13 year old to be driving a car on private property? (It's stupid for sure when unsupervised and with a bunch of other teens, but really, would the police do anything?)

At the very least I would think it classifies as "Operation of a motor vehicle without a license."

80% of the people I went to highschool with had large properties that either was or still is farmland. The all drove several years on the property, before they got their licence. A few did venture all the way to school in a car when they were not licenced or insured.:)

It's private property though. There's nothing illegal about it. It's no different than if they were riding dirt bikes around the back yard.
At most a noise complaint could be filed. I don't see that working though since the car is probably much quieter than a lawnmower.

If you're concerned, call and ask the police if this is in any way illegal; if it is, they will come and investigate the incident.
Just call and say you're a concerned citizen. Some people need to wake up, even forcibly.

Multiple-time Canadian Rally champions Frank and Dan Sprongl spoke about doing EXACTLY that at their parent's farm back when they were in their early teens, in the 80's.
If I were you, I'd go over and get the driver's autograph. ;)
In any case, if it were my kids, my back yard and my car, I'd be friggin fuming if any of my "concerned neighbours" called the cops on me!

yeah, I know..they have every right to let their 13 yr. old kid drive recklessly around their yard doing donuts, rolling the car and injuring/killing the driver & his 5 friends/passengers
doesn't mean I have to like it

Let them be.
If they kill themselves, problem solved... You will not have to witness them stunting in their backyard anymore.
Let Darwinism sort everything out

Amen to that! Better they kill themselves off now and there rather than a DUI or worse when we're on the road alongside them! Maybe they can crash into the house too and add some financial pain to their parents too!
