Have you lived in any of the three cities mentioned?

If not, I guess you can't really knock it until you have.

There was a comment in the article, people seem to be confusing "Best place to visit" vs "Best place to live"

I don't see how LA's Sports and Entertainment could be rated so average, but great cities in this list! I've just added a few cities to my "To Travel to" list.

Edit: and agreed to the poster above. St. Fransisco is actually a place I can see myself living in the future, for numerous reasons (relaxing vibe, pretty with the bay and Golden Gate), and besides the fact that Chicago is freeeeezing in the winter, I've been there 3 times and honestly couldn't find anything bad about the city at all. It's a bigger Toronto with a beautiful waterfront and cool above ground subway system. Only bad thing about SF is that space is very limited and there's earthquakes (which are usually just shimmers).

I dont see how Chicago considering how I have been there and also have relatives there and they say its a pretty bad city with lots of crime and murder.

San Fransisco on the other hand is an amazing city. I have been there too and its soo calm and peaceful and its by the shoreline. Its a beautiful place.

Shouldn't the city of Luxembourg be there since it was named the safest country in the world?

I love how Chicago is first on this list, yet is 2nd or 3rd in the worst city in America list too :p.

San Fran should be #1 in that list for sure.. I've lived there off and on for a total of 6 months and I wish I could just move down there permanently!

One has to differentiate between living there as an expat (i.e. single vs. e.g. raising a family), for a short term (like 2-3 years vs. say 7-10 years), etc, etc.

By the way, San Francisco is generally speaking a rather good place to live.

I would have ranked NYC a bit higher.

I mean, if Pam Beasley is considered a 6 there...;)

San Fran maybe in the top three.

However if you have some kind of a death wish (aka ring of fire), I wouldn't live there permanently.

If I had a choice of three based on past experiences i would say

San Fransisco
Venice
Amsterdam

Anyone who says Vancouver is so great has only been here on a sunny summer day.

Only thing that makes Vancouver great is Marc Emery's store, which the city is trying to shut down.

I don't know about Venice. It's a beautiful city to visit but living there would be a PITA. The logistics of buying a new fridge, for example. Or even as simple as buying underwear or seeing a movie.

Just like what some people have already said, the list was compiled by the AskMen.com people for its readers specifically, so the list is highly subjective. Let's face it: there are only 3 things men generally care about -- women, sports, and beer. That's it. It doesn't matter if Chicago is cold and dirty as you say it is. If it has all those 3 things in great quantity, then they'll rank it highly.

And consumer electronics also!

Chicago is only one of two places in North America where there is a Nokia store ;)

Well, to be fair, Toronto is one of those cities that gets a bit LESS rainfall. Rain is part of life in many other places; and if you compare it with the many more messy snow days here, I for one definitely find raining more ... romantic. LOL! And yes, Vancouver is great.

Visited there once for a few days, didn't find it to be anything too special from my stay to allow it to be ranked #1.

Chicago is a great city, but its definitely not better than NYC, London, Barcelona or Sydney. I think Toronto > Vancouver as well. Vancouver is so boring is more or less still a backwaters place compared to Toronto.
