I believe that by-law is set by the city.
In some cities it is different by area's as well. Some places have to be in a tourist area to be open on holidays.
edit: looks like it is set by the province...
As part of the resolution Mississauga Council will ask that the Province clarify the Statutory Holidays Act and the ability for retail stores to open, should they choose.

perhaps look up the Statutory Holidays Act and see what it says. Like I said above I know places in tourists area's are allowed to stay open. I.E. downtown T.O., Niagara Falls and such.

Can't you let people have a choice in what they do? Let people open their businesses if they want to. Let people shop if they want to.

It's a day off for a lot of us, but at the same time, we don't observe the holiday for what it really is.

i think if you have employees you gotta let them take a day off or something (don't quote me), the owners themselves can however keep the store open

Good Friday is great.
It's a guaranteed day off for most everyone,
even people who work retail, like me! :)

Can you live a day without electricity? Power companies should have at least a day off too.

for stat holidays:
if you run a designated tourist area, you're allowed to remain open (ie. pmall, eaton centre). other then that, you have to close down.
eaton centre is open but i believe most the shops aren't. just the mall.

If your Catholic, its against the Vatican to open a business on a Catholic holiday such as Easter/Good Friday.

What???
I'm Catholic too, by the way,
and I've NEVER heard anyone use the phrase "its against the Vatican"...
Did you know that in Quebec, only government offices and schools are closed today, but the majority of businesses remain open?
I guess the entire province of Quebec is "against the Vatican"?
I believe your facts are incorrect.

I see many restaurants open. Are they in violation? My uncles place is open 365 days a year and he will laugh in your face if you ask him to close and lose thousands of dollars a day.
